Sadie’s first Father-Daughter Dance

This past Friday was the Father-Daughter dance at Sadie’s school. They call it a Sweetheart Dance or something similar to as to not discriminate against those kids who may not have a dad to bring, and told kids they could bring a “special adult” but it was about 99% daughters and dads.

Sadie was SO EXCITED to go. We decided not to take her last year (I forget why) and she was a little upset to miss out so we knew for sure to add it on the calendar this time.

She planned out her outfit for weeks, laid it out on her bedroom floor the morning of, and even picked out Dave’s outfit with him.

We picked her up from after-school care a little early so they could both get ready and then it was picture time!

Sadie like, forgot how to smile so I was behind the camera yelling out silly things and using words like fart and poop to get her to laugh.

See? So much better. ๐Ÿ™‚ I also tried to get her to wear these cute gold flats she has but she wanted the clogs with the heel instead since “heels are fancier.”

Once Dave was ready we took some photos of the two of them.

I thought that Dave would be overdressed but he said he didn’t care, Sadie had picked his outfit so it was what he was going to wear. Turns out he was right around the middle of how dads were dressed, so it worked out well. (Although I think he said next year he’ll wear jeans.)

A couple of days prior to the dance I ordered Sadie a little corsage from a local florist. It wasn’t necessary but I knew she’d LOVE it and that if she saw other girls with one she’d want one next year anyway haha. It was so sweet! She had no idea what it was, but loved it and now it’s hanging on her bedroom wall drying out.

We went off to the dance and it was adorable! Normally additional parents aren’t allowed in but I was volunteering at the dance with the PTA so I got to see Sadie, her friends and some of the parents I’ve become friends with.

Sadie had so much fun running around with her girlfriends dancing, (I’d show photos but I don’t want to share pics of other people’s kids) doing arts and crafts the PTA committee had laid out and dancing with Dave in between all of that.

It was such a great night and I can’t wait for them to go again next year!

Do your kids have these dances?

Sadie’s school is having a version for boys later in the year which I think is super nice. It’s the first year they’re doing it! Did you ever have these growing up? My school certainly never had a Father Daughter Dance!

  1. Our school finally changed the name of the Daddy Daughter Dance to Girls Night Out. It’s on Sunday but Gabbie still didn’t decide if she wants to go. Sadie looks adorable and she and Dave make a lovely couple!

    • Thank you! I can see Sadie maybe not wanting to go when she’s older, but really the girls run around with their friends while the Dad’s stand around most of the time haha.

  2. This is the sweetest! She’s going to cherish those memories of the corsage and dancing with her dad for years to come. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. There is no such thing in Germany, so no, I have never been to a father-daughter dance but I have danced plenty with my Dad at other occasions LOL

Sadie looks so cute in her dress! What a great night!

  4. This is so sweet, and I love all the photos! I think events like this can be SUPER tough (speaking as someone who would not have been able to attend one of these dances) so I’m glad it wasn’t just for fathers and daughters. But I’m also glad that Sadie DOES have a wonderful father who was happy to go to this dance with her. She will cherish these memories forever!

    • Yes I’m very happy her school decided to change it up and make it “bring a special person” vs just Daddy/Daughter, and that they’re doing a version for Mother/Son and Special Person in the Spring. They’re extremely inclusive and it makes me really happy!

  5. This is so cute! I’ve seen a lot of these pop up on social media – it’s weird because I don’t think they had them when I was growing up. Also, it’s a fabulous idea to do one for boys too!

  6. While we never had father daughter at school we did have them for Girl Scouts. Although it was also a square dance, which Iโ€™m sure made it easier for all the dads!
