Elf on the Shelf Shenanigans

I have a confession to make.

I can’t lie… I LOVE Elf on the Shelf! I get ridiculous amounts of pleasure from moving that damned thing around and setting it up in crazy situations. And every single morning I’m rewarded with Sadie getting out of bed and immediately going through the house searching for our elf Apple to see what she’s up to. I know us parents are always looking for ideas, so here are some of the things our elf has been up to recently.

Flamingo Float Elf

I bought this great kit from a local mom this year – she calls it the Forgetful Elf and it’s so helpful for when I’m stuck for an idea or just plain lazy! Sadie got a kick out of this flamingo float and the elf floating around in our sink! And then she immediately claimed the floatie for herself haha.

Under the Crepe Paper Christmas Tree

Apple made her own Christmas Tree and stole Sadie’s presents she bought from the school holiday market to put underneath! (Sadie was NOT happy about that at first!) The star is a Play-Doh tool, thankyouverymuch.

Elf at the Car Wash

The Forgetful Elf kit came with the cute little car wash sign, sponge and 2 cars and I added Dave’s old collection of Matchbox cars and the bottle of Ajax to complete the scene!

That’s Not an Apple!

This has been one of my favorites so far! I took a tiny chunk out of a red onion, scattered some of the skin on the elf’s clothes and put a note saying, “This apple tastes gross!” Sadie thought it was hysterical. “Apple, that’s not an apple! That’s an onion!” 😉

Ball Pit Elf

This was also pretty high on my list and got a LOT of comments on social media. Total discretion – I stole it from Pinterest – but it was hilarious especially since Sadie told Santa she wanted a ball pit for Christmas! I also almost forgot this night and bolted out of bed to rig this one together. The next morning Sadie came down and said, “Apple… that is NOT what I mean!” LOL!

Elf Stuck in the TV!

Another Pinterest find! You can find this on YouTube and just make it full screen. Our TV is hooked up to a computer so it was easy to do but if you have Chromecast or whatever you can just cast it from your phone or computer to a TV. Sadie didn’t really think her elf was in the TV but thought it was her elf playing a joke on her. I know one mom did it and her daughter FREAKED OUT thinking the elf was gone in the TV forever!

Hershey Kisses Elf

Another great one from the Forgetful Elf kit, but you could totally do this with some tinfoil and a printout of the Hershey Kisses logo. Whenever Apple leaves Sadie stuff like this (like the kisses for her to eat) she always makes sure to thank her elf! It’s too cute.

Hanukkah Elf

Just because the Elf on the Shelf gimmick is meant for Christmas doesn’t mean that our elf can’t celebrate both holidays – just like Sadie does! I set up Apple to be the Shamash – the helper candle on the menorah. I was highly amused but Sadie was more concerned about where Apple put the actual bulb for the menorah!

Namaste Yoga Elf

How cute is that little yoga mat and towel? Sadie was talking about yoga the other day so Apple decided to get her yoga on too!

Reindeer Poop Elf

Apple tried to trick Sadie and set out some Coco Puffs and pretended they were reindeer poop! And then Sadie immediately ate them. HAHA! You could do this with any chocolate candy or other small foods. Especially great if you have that reindeer elf pet!

The Floor is Lava! Elf

Sadie LOVES playing The Floor is Lava! and jumping from place to place without touching the ground. I taped Apple to our mirror and put the note “The Floor is Lava!” next to her. I’m telling you, I have way too much fun with these!

Dobby is Free! Elf

Dave inadvertently gave me the idea for this one (I forget how! but he did!) Using one of Sadie’s socks I set up the elf with Dobby-like ears and sat her on a pile of my Harry Potter books and any other HP paraphernalia I could find. Sadie has seen most of the movies and been to Harry Potter land in Florida so she understood it but this one was definitely more for me. 😉

Elf on the Shelf Farts

Kids love potty humor! I got this idea from Momfessionals and it was hysterical. There is a video of Sadie smelling it too. (At first, she wouldn’t smell it but then I made her.) I put a few drops of peppermint essential oil inside. Peppermint elf farts! I also hot glue gun-ed the elf’s hand to her face. Hope that comes off easy!

If you do Elf on the Shelf in your house, do you just move it from place to place, or do you set it up in elaborate ways too?

  1. These are cute! We are definitely boring Elf parents and don’t do anything exciting with our Elf Sprinkles…but we are lucky if we remember to move the damn thing every night!
