Broadway Weekend

This past weekend Dave and I were lucky enough to get to see not one, but TWO Broadway shows! Broadway Week comes around twice a year (I think) and you can get 2-for-1 tickets to some of the hot Broadway shows. (Not Hamilton obviously, but that’s okay because we got Hamilton tickets for our anniversary in March – WOO HOO!!! Dave’s sister informed him it was Broadway Week and so he grabbed tickets for us to see Kinky Boots and Aladdin!

We LOVE going to Broadway shows, but don’t get to go often enough because a) cost and b) well… cost! The Broadway Week deals are the perfect reason to head into the city and indulge!

Friday evening I left work a bit early, got Sadie from school and dropped her off at my mom’s office so she could spend the night at my parents. (Thank you, parents!) Dave and I decided to drive into the city vs taking the train and found pretty inexpensive parking thanks to the Best Parking app. We didn’t really have plans for dinner, so we wandered around and decided to eat at the Heartland Brewery Chop House. Honestly, it was fine. I have eaten there before and Dave hadn’t but we like Heartland Brewery so we figured why not. The food was fine, the beer is good, we knew that, but we were just underwhelmed in general. But then overwhelmed by the price! We know the city is expensive, we’re both born and raised New Yorkers and I worked in the city for almost a decade but sheesh. We paid over $100 for our meal – one appetizer, an entree each and a beer for me and beer flight for Dave. Crazy. Needless to say, it won’t be on our list of places to go back!

We shmoozed around Times Square for a bit too. I fell in love with this store that was all about these Asian characters from Line Friends, which are apparently characters from a mobile messaging app (LINE) and then became a huge character brand. I have no idea, I am not in the know but OMG they were so cute! And we acted like tourists and took some pictures.

Then it was time for the show!

It was fantastic. Originally I had wanted to try and see it when Brendan Urie of Panic! at the Disco was part of the cast but sadly he left before Dave got these tickets. It was still really good though! I loved all of the drag queens in it – obviously, they were fabulous!

Then on Sunday, we took Sadie to see her first Broadway show – Aladdin! I was afraid that the train ride into the city would overshadow the show – Sadie was so excited about it.

I’m glad we did it but we cut it close! The train got in at 12:45 and then we had to BOOK IT to the theater to make the 1:00pm show! We basically ran in right as the lights were dimming. Phew.

Aladdin was great! Awesome for kids and something I will cherish as Sadie’s first Broadway show. I have to say though, Genie is the best part of the show. Jasmine was great, but I couldn’t stand Aladdin’s voice. It was very high and nasally and he sang vibrato, which I just found to be irritating. Oh well. The Genie and the show itself made up for it!

Afterwards, we went out to lunch with friends of ours who also saw the show and went to Ellen’s Stardust Diner! It’s pretty touristy, but we all felt like doing something touristy so off we went!

It was so much fun! All of the waitstaff sing and they are all Broadway caliber. It’s awesome! The food was pretty good too. I had a black cow – a Coke float with chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream. Mmmmm.

It was a great Broadway filled weekend! I can’t wait to see Hamilton in March, and hopefully, we can take Sadie to another show soon!

  1. I love Broadway. It’s been a long time since I’ve been!

  2. Have you ever entered into any of the Broadway lotteries? They’ve gotten a bit better (you know you’ve won 24-36 hours before the show) so you can plan accordingly. The hubs and I were entering the Hamilton lottery religiously and he won it a couple months ago so we paid $20 for 2nd row seats!

  3. Oh man, I’m so jealous of you ladies who live that close to NYC. It is my favorite city ever and I miss it so much! Funnily enough, the last time we were there in 2012 we ate at Heartland Brewery! So crazy but I recognized it instantly when you started talking about it!

  4. Oh my goodness, I can forgotten about Stardust, but I went there my very first time in NYC, when I went on a high school trip and I freakin’ loved it. I can’t imagine that 33 year old me would be as charmed, but I remember thinking it was the greatest thing ever back then.

  5. Dude, $100 for two people at a freaking brewery is insane, even for New York, I feel like! I’m so jealous that you saw Aladdin, though; I’m dying for it to come this way soon! Did you know Cleveland has the second-largest theater scene in the U.S., behind only NYC? I need to go see more shows, too! PS: Love Sadie’s & your matching messy buns. So cute. 🙂
