My 3(4)th of July Recap!

I tried to do something clever there with it being my 34th birthday AND the 4th of July in the title, but I don’t think it worked. Oh well!

I had a wonderfully long weekend for my birthday and Independence Day. It was relaxing, full of friends and good food and overall just a great weekend.

On Saturday we had a lazy morning and then good friends of ours and their kids came over. We decided to hit the beach even though the weather was iffy and had a great time, even though we were freezing at times! It was so windy and overcast!

We left the beach once it looked like it was going to rain, but made sure to stop at Marvel on the way home for some delicious soft serve! Marvel (pronounced like Carvel) is an institution on Long Beach and has been around since 1951. It’s a walk-up stand, and the only real downside is that there’s no picnic tables or anything to eat at, so you just kind of sit by your car. It’s all part of the experience! Marvel Ice Cream | Perks of Being a JAP |

Sunday was my birthday! I slept in a little late and was serenaded by Dave and Sadie. Sadie gave me a birthday card with a cat that purrs when you touch it, so she obviously loved that. Dave gave me two great cards and the most insanely beautiful pair of diamond earrings. I’ve been wanting a pair for years and Dave knew that – they are gorgeous.

I wish I could have taken a better photo of the earrings, but my camera is getting a bit old. But that’s okay because as a birthday gift to myself I bought a new camera! It is arriving today but you can see it in the graphic below.

I was very lucky this year! In addition to the earrings, I found a great deal on Amazon for a Canon EOS Rebel T6 Digital SLR Camera that comes with a ton of accessories including extra lenses, a bag, two tripods and a remote. I’ve wanted one for the longest time and finally pulled the trigger. I also gifted myself (I was very nice to myself this year!) a new Kendra Scott necklace. This one has been sold out every other time I look, but then I saw it on sale and available so I snatched it up! It’s turquoise with gold vein running through the stone. So pretty!

Dave took Sadie off to her swim lesson and I got ready, popped on a new Stitch Fix dress and headed out to get a manicure and pedicure. I got my first powder gel manicure and I love it!

The powder gel was great. My nails feel so strong like they have tips put on them and they don’t use any UV light in this manicure. It is a little more expensive, but we’ll see how long it lasts if it’s worth it!

We headed off to brunch after I got home at a new (to us) place I found – American Beauty Bistro. The place was surprisingly empty for Sunday brunch/lunch but we didn’t let that deter us.

We started off with some killer Bloody Mary’s.

And Dave and I both went the waffle route. I got a waffle with Nutella and strawberries.

And Dave went for the waffle grilled cheese!

Everything was really tasty and the service was wonderful. It’s definitely a place we’ll be revisiting! After brunch, I took a quick trip out to Wal-Mart by myself (I love shopping alone!) and picked up some cute Pioneer Woman placemats and a napkin holder. Then we just relaxed at home for the rest of the day, and had the BEST dessert – an ice cream pizza! So, so tasty and I am still eating slices from it!

Monday I took off work and my best friend Allison came out to us with her boyfriend Hiram and we hit the beach (again!) It was a nice, hot day so Sadie and Dave got a ton of time in the water while I stayed in the sand. Oh, and we buried Sadie. She looks very unhappy, doesn’t she?At the Beach | Perks of Being a JAP |

For Independence Day we got a slow start and bummed around the house in the morning and then Sadie and I made these Rice Krispie Treats that I saw on Dara’s blog. I didn’t take any photos but they were a big hit at our friend’s house later on and we will definitely be making them again.

We spent the day swimming in our friend’s aunt’s pool and hanging out – Sadie went off the diving board for the first time! She is still learning how to swim but she had a PFD on, Dave was with her and she’s getting stronger and stronger after each lesson. Once it got dark Dave put on a show for us lighting small fireworks which knocked the socks off the small kiddos.

And since my family was so patriotic looking (totally not planned) I had to get a picture!

  1. Such a great time to have a birthday! The camera you’re getting sounds amazing. I’ve been wanting diamond earrings too. Maybe your Dave should get my Dave that info, lol! The bloody mary – wow, does it have pickles?? The waffles look so good! So happy you made the watermelon rice krispie treats also! And I got a mani pedi today. I literally cannot remember the last time I had a pedicure, so it was long overdue! Glad you got to treat yourself for your birthday!
