Budapest in (Even More) Pictures

Touring Budapest, Hungary | Perks of Being a JAP | www.perksofbeingajap.com

In my last post about Budapest, I shared photos from the first days of my trip. Once my event started we went on a tour with a group of participants and guess what… I took a TON more photos! You can read about part one here

Our tour took us across the Danube and into Pest. Our first stop was at Hősök tere, otherwise known as Heroes Square. This is a major square that boasts a ton of statues of Hungarian leaders and royalty.

We then walked over to The Széchenyi Bath. Budapest is built on top of thermal springs and so there are medicinal baths throughout the city. This one dates back to the early 1900s!

While we didn’t get to partake in the baths, we did get to peek inside!

Our next stop was the Hungarian State Opera House.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was next, St. Stephen’s Basilica. Not only was it gorgeous inside, but there were some amazing views at the top!

After a short time inside, we began the perilous climb to the top of the dome. We weren’t aware that we would be climbing the 364 STAIRS TO THE TOP because there is an elevator you can take most of the way up, but then our tour guide suddenly veered right, started walking up the stairs and up the whole group of us went.

Holy hell. These are the stairs of death.

And this is inside the dome.

But the views at the top were SO worth it.

I have a major fear of heights and falling and so going back down those stairs was NOT fun. Shudder. Our next stop was Parliament, but on the way we stopped at the German Occupation Memorial, which as you can read here is quite controversial. Basically (and our tour guide alluded to this as well) many Hungarians like to pretend that the country was an innocent victim of WWII and not a co-conspirator for the majority of the war with the Nazis. Ahem. And the memorial was constructed in the dead of night, so clearly there was a disconnect between popular opinion and the creators/masterminds behind the memorial.

Anyway, we also stopped by Liberty Square on our way to Parliament and were greeted by a familiar face. Hey, Ronald! It seems random, but the statue is there honoring Ronald Reagan to honor his efforts to end the Cold War.

Liberty Square is also the home to the United States Embassy and the Hungarian National Bank.

And finally, we made it to Parliament! Our tour guide told a funny story (maybe tall tale) about how when Parliament was built in Hungary it was the largest in the world… until Great Britain got jealous and built their Parliament and made sure it was bigger than Hungary’s. Anyway, neither of them are the largest in the world nowadays, but this place was still massive.

Inside Parliament, 40 kilograms of gold were used in decoration.

The building is smoke-free now, but back in the day they had these numbered cigarette/cigar holders so the officials could place their cancer stick outside of the voting chamber and remember where they left it for later.

The next few days were filled with content and meetings taking place indoors so I am so thankful to have been able to see the city in the few days leading up to the event!
