Four Hours in Nashville, TN

Four Hours in Nashville | Perks of Being a JAP | www.perksofbeingajap.com

Ok, I actually spent more than four hours in Nashville, but the time I was out and about was around that, and I was actually in Nashville for like 22 hours. I spent the week prior in Atlanta for a work event, then flew to Nashville for a quick site visit to a hotel we are going to be at in July for another event. I was actually supposed to fly out to Nashville in April but my flight was canceled due to weather.

I stayed at the wonderful Loews Vanderbilt Hotel and LOVED my room. I was a gorgeous suite overlooking Vanderbilt University’s campus and adored the decor throughout the room.

Love, love, LOVE the decor at the @loewsvanderbilt hotel! Great vibe and can’t wait to explore Nashville!

After my site visit with my hotel contacts (where I had a FANTASTIC breakfast with fried green tomatoes and cheddar grits mmmmm) I headed out to Honky Tonk Highway to check out the scene. I was immediately reminded of Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Even early in the day, it was mobbed with people! Music was coming out of every door and although it was daytime the neon lights were flashing at every other spot.

I also caught some history here and there of how the area used to look between the faded painted signs on buildings and the buildings themselves! I also loved the mosaic tile some stores used to welcome shoppers into their space!

In my wanderings (and it was HOT) I stumbled across this random mural on the other side of Piranha’s, on 3rd Ave N. I tried to piece it all together with PicMonkey, but it’s slightly off. Sorry!

One thing about Honky Tonk Highway is that it’s filled with “woo-girls.” LOL. That’s what my hotel contact called them when I told him how I had to weave my way around the tons of bachelorette parties in the area! You’ll see a lot of them on those pedal pubs, bopping up and down the street, drinking, pedaling, shouting out to music and going, “WOOOOOOOOOO!” Hahahaha. After awhile there I had my fill and wanted to grab some food in a quieter area. I grabbed an Uber and headed out to The Gulch.

If I wasn’t in a time crunch I would have spent so much more time exploring this area! But I only had a couple of hours until I had to check out and head to the airport so I made some quick decisions. I wanted to visit some breweries but was also STARVING. I got dropped off and immediately spotted the neon chicken advertising Party Fowl! Even if the food wasn’t good, the name alone pulled me in.

When I said I was by myself, the host said I could grab a seat at the back bar if I wanted since it was empty. Sure! It did take the bartender a little bit of time to get to me because I don’t think she realized anyone had sat there, but once I had her attention I got a menu, grabbed a drink and was good to go.

I chose the Honky Tonk Cherry Sour for my beer and it was delicious! Great beer for a hot day. For my food, I wanted to try the Hot Chicken that Nashville is famous for but also wasn’t in the mood for a ton of food so I chose instead to get the Deconstructed Cobb salad! They had me at the hot chicken and the SMOKED HARD BOILED EGGS. I didn’t go too hot with my chicken – I chose medium for my hotness level – and it was still SPICY.

After my belly was filled I walked right next door to Jackalope Brewing Company!

I probably shouldn’t have gone on a full stomach but again, time was ticking! I ordered a flight and loved that you could make your own from the selections on the board. I was shocked/pleasantly surprised to discover that the Lovebird Strawberry/Raspberry Hefeweizen was my favorite! I usually stay away from Hefeweizens. The other beers were good, but nothing to rave about IMHO.

They did have a great selection of branded merchandise and I walked away with a couple of shirts and some great, pink knee-high socks. However, I was a bit disappointed in their options to purchase beer because you could either buy a growler or a 6-pack, but nothing in between. I wound up with a 6-pack of the Lovebird but would have rather picked up a few different bottles/cans to take home with me for Dave.

AND they had a great little tribute to the Pink Boot Society. Rock on lady brewers!

A few blocks away from Jackalope is Yazoo Brewing Company.

Yazoo hosted a sour beer fest a little while back called Embrace the Funk Fest. I wish I would have been in Nashville for it! They still had a bunch of sour beers on tap and I tried out one of two of them. Even though their sampler trays are awesome (they are shaped like a Y and on an angle) I couldn’t stomach a flight at this point but they did offer 2oz samples to purchase individually, which was perfect for me.

After I ordered my initial beer I snagged a seat at the bar – helpful hint – you have to wait in line for beer UNLESS you’re seated at the bar. Then the bartenders will/can help you there. Seats are pretty limited though!

On my way out I grabbed a shirt for me and am empty, matte black growler for Dave as well as a special edition, limited release sour beer. The bartender blew my mind when he told me the growler was a chalkboard growler, to which I immediately replied, “SHUT UP.” Classy all the way!

After Yazoo, I hightailed it back to my hotel so I could throw everything back in my suitcase and hit the road to the airport. My trip home is a whole other story and LaGuardia airport is officially the worst airport in the history of ever. That is all.

I feel like in my limited time in Nashville I made good use of my time! And if there was something I missed seeing or doing, I’ll be back in July! (Can’t wait!)

  4. You did a great job fitting all of that in! I’ve never heard of the term Honky Tonk Highway before, but it makes so much sense… locals just call it Broadway and kind of roll their eyes like, “There’s a festival downtown, gotta avoid the tourists on Broadway” or “I almost got run over by a bachelorette party on Broadway” LOL Locals do go to Broadway for concerts and hockey games, taking out-of-town friends there (Tootsie’s and Robert’s Western World are the preferred haunts), and occasionally eating someplace now that the food has gotten a lot better. The Ryman and Ascend Amphitheatre are my fav venues.

Hot chicken is a must-try in Nashville, and I suggest Hattie B’s next time you’re in town! Dan used to work at Yazoo, and we love the girls at Jackalope. Great brewery neighbors for sure!

  5. I really need to go to Nashville, I’ve been to Chattanooga, but I think Nashville is a TOTALLY different vibe, and probably more my style.
