Sadie and I are doing so many crafts lately and now with Finding Dory out on DVD, I couldn’t resist another one! What better way to enjoy the movie by making a Finding Dory Aquarium!

The number one thing we needed to make our aquarium was a tissue box! So I headed off to BJ’s to pick up some tissues! You can find these in the Facial Tissues aisle – in my BJ’s they were along the back wall of the store.

And if you’re lucky you can find special edition Kleenex® featuring Finding Dory! The Disney Finding Dory designs are only available for a limited time so keep your eye out!

Here’s what you’ll need for your very own Finding Dory Aquarium:

  • Kleenex® – Finding Dory or another Kleenex tissue box
  • Multi-color construction paper
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Safety scissors for your child and regular for you
  • Blue tissue paper
  • Black marker
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Tape (packing tape & masking tape)
  • Cling wrap

And here’s what you do!

Take your tissue box and remove the perforated top. Then turn the box on its side and cut open the side you want to to be the front of your aquarium. Once all four sides are cut, remove the piece of cardboard and save it – DO NOT THROW IT OUT! Remove the tissues from the box. I put the stack of tissues in a reusable bag to put in my car to have on hand – these essential Kleenex facial tissues are perfect for makeup smudges, sniffles and sneezes, Sadie’s messy face and more.

Then take the cardboard cut-out and glue it to the back of the tissue box, so you have a background for your aquarium. Next, have your child cut out the fish and other sea creatures they want to include! I brought Finding Dory pictures up on my phone and free-handed them with a sharpie. I let Sadie cut out some and she asked me to do the harder ones.

Once the fish are cut out pick some to glue to the inside of the aquarium.

Now you’ll need some seaweed! We took some pipe cleaners and cut them down and then twisted them around to make seaweed. Take a little glue and stick them to the back of the aquarium.

Next, spread a whole lot of glue onto the bottom of the tissue box. Don’t skimp! Then take the blue tissue paper, rip it up into small-ish pieces and crumple the pieces before sticking onto the glue to make your aquarium floor.

Now my original plan was to take the other fish we cut out and attach them to the top of the tissue box to make a 3D aquarium. But we changed that up when I was readying our Nemo and Dory for that step and saw Sadie playing with the fish in the top tissue slot of the box like it was a puppet booth! So we went with that idea instead. Just take a small length of pipe cleaner and attach it to the back of the fish with masking tape. Voila!

The next and last step was to cover the open side of the tissue box so it would truly be like an aquarium! We took cling wrap and with Dave’s help covered the front and taped around each side with packing tape.

The best parts are how easy this was and how much Sadie loves it! She played with it all night and right up until we had movie night with Finding Dory!

  1. This is super cute!! My nieces have a beach themed play room, so we might have to try this with them (with help of their big sister, too, since I don’t know if they’ve used scissors yet).
