Eating and Drinking Our Way Through Vermont

Eating & Drinking Our Way Through Vermont | Perks of Being a JAP | www.perksofbeingajap.com

Here’s a tip: if you’re dieting or doing something like Whole 30 DO NOT GO TO VERMONT! There is just too much temptation. I mean it’s the land of beer, cheese and maple syrup for goodness sake! I tried so hard to stick to Whole 30 and by day two my resolve was gone. WORTH IT.

It was hard to take pictures everywhere but here are some of the highlights:

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

We hit Cold Hollow right around closing time so the place was pretty empty and there weren’t samples being given out much anymore nor was there any cider or donuts being made. We were able to taste some local jams, oils, and spreads and walked away with some apple cider donuts that they still had and also some cold pressed apple cider honey vinegar. The place has a TON of Vermont-made goodies to choose from – I only wish we would have been able to go earlier to have been able to see the cider press in action.

Prohibition Pig is a brewery with an adjoining restaurant. We hit up the restaurant for dinner one night and had to wait. One thing I learned is that if a restaurant in the ski areas of Vermont takes reservations you should jump on it early. We waited for a long time and by the time we got sat, Sadie couldn’t hang for much longer (as you can see from the photos.) She is a trooper though and luckily we got a bench seat so when she was done eating she laid down with her head in my lap.

The service at Prohibition Pig wasn’t the best (and it was super busy) but the food made up for it. It was AMAZING. We shared an appetizer of pork cracklins – they were literally popping in our mouths like Pop Rocks! So good. I went for a smoked half-chicken platter and let me tell you – this was quite possibly the best chicken I’ve ever had in my life. Comes very close to a chicken dish I had at the now closed Harold Dieterle restaurant Perilla. It was so juicy and succulent – perfectly cooked! I had cheese grits and collard greens for my sides and they were also really good! Dave got a pepper crusted burger and said it was cooked perfectly – one of the best burgers he’s had!

Right next door is the brewery – by this time it was late and we had a sleeping Sadie to contend with, so we stopped in just to look around but didn’t sit down or try anything.

One night we decided to have a nice dinner on the Smugglers Notch property and enjoy their locally sourced restaurant Hearth and Candle. It’s very intimate and cozy and I highly suggest reservations! We got an early reservation (which worked for us) but otherwise, they were booked!

Sadie had some amazing Cabot mac and cheese (as you can tell by her face she LOVED IT) and Dave and I each got the bacon-wrapped filet mignon – it had Vermont blue cheese, roasted garlic, truffled demi, shiitakes, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. It was SO good. We also shared a Vermont cheese and roasted garlic board which was heavenly. It is a bit on the pricier side, but it’s worth it for a nice, local dinner.

I was really excited to go to Stowe Cider! I have never been to a cidery before. (Cidery? Cider mill? What’s the proper term?) We headed there and I got a flight, and Sadie also did a little tasting herself of non-alcoholic ciders! She had a hot one and cold one… she liked the hot cider better! My favorite was the Smugglers Reserve Bourbon because well, I love everything having to do with bourbon!

The place was very cute – well lit, lots of tables and games you could grab and play. I also appreciated the apple shaped flight trays! The bartender also recognized Dave from his visit two weeks prior – she said he was very distinctive haha!

There was no way we could go to Vermont and not go to the Ben & Jerry’s Factory! Dave and I had visited years ago on a family vacation but we knew Sadie would love it so off we went again. (I mean, who was complaining?) We did the tour (which you can’t take photos of) and got to sample the strawberry cheesecake ice cream. And then we headed to the shop to get some more ice cream! (Before dinner – Sadie was ecstatic.) Sadie got her favorite – strawberry and Dave and I got shakes. I had a Cherry Garcia shake which was as fantastic as it sounds. Definitely hit up Ben & Jerry’s Factory if you’re in the area – the tour is only a few dollars and its a really cool place!

(One day I will go back and get the Vermonster!)

Whenever Dave goes skiing in Vermont he stops at the Vermont Country Deli on the way home to grab some food and bring us back this AMAZING mac and cheese that they have. We stopped on our way home for lunch and OMG the crowd! The place is slammed and there are just counters and Vermont made goods to purchase, no sit down space. We wound up eating mac and cheese in the car haha. IT IS SO GOOD.

This is also a great place to stop and pick up some Vermont goodies on your way back home, just beware the crowds! There’s also no public bathroom in the deli so head next door to the Vermont Country Store. They also have some Vermont goods for sale, but no hot/fresh food. And no crowds!

Do you have any Vermont food spots you love? Share! Dave is there all the time and I see us heading to Vermont more and more as a family.

  1. My husband and I went to Vermont for our honeymoon – we also loved Cold Hollow and Prohibition Pig. We were kind of underwhelmed by the Ben and Jerry’s tour, but I think that was because it was SO crowded when we were there. I love the Vermont Country Store cookbook, so I was hoping to make it to the store, but we ran out of time. We also had fun hunting for Heady Topper IPA… we ended up waiting for the morning delivery at a convenience store to get a couple 6 packs to bring home, and they also served it at Prohibition Pig. It was worth driving around for!

    • Oh fun! It must have been a great place to honeymoon! The Heady Topper obsession is ridiculous. Dave actually went back to Vermont a weekend or two ago and got to the brewery in time to find some – he bought 8 of them!!

  2. That bacon wrapped filet mignon – I’m drooling! It sounds and looks amazing. I have ALWAYS wanted to go to Vermont and one day we will get there! It’s definitely on my bucket list!

  3. I’ve only been to Vermont once, and that was with my dad, stepmom, and little sisters… so no booze on that trip. 🙁 But we did hit up an orchard, a nice little chocolate shop, and a Cabot’s cheese place. And of course Ben & Jerry’s. All of these places look great! And adding them all to my giant list of places I want/need to go visit. I especially need to keep my eye out for Stowe Cider! I’ll have to check their distribution to see if they come out this way.

  5. Oh my goodness, what a fun trip! Everything looked soooo good! I haven’t been that way out East yet!

  6. This looks like such a fun trip! I did a B&B (the old-fashioned kind, not an AirB&B) in Vermont a few years ago when I was living in new Hampshire, & it was one of the most soothing, calming, relaxing trips I’ve ever taken. Vermont is full of SUCH great places & experiences & FOOD! I brought home so much cheese.
