Purging the Pantries

Purging the Pantries | Perks of Being a JAP | www.perksofbeingajap.com

Second purging task done! (Woo hoo!) I took advantage of a slow weekend to go through our pantries. We have one in the kitchen and one in the downstairs den and it had been too long since I had gone through the contents of them. I actually don’t think that I’ve ever gone through them checking expiration dates or anything and we’ve lived in our house for almost five years! (Oops.) Here is the before of the kitchen pantry.

It’s always psuedo-organized, but then things get stacked on top of each other, bags aren’t closed properly and all hell breaks loose. My first step was to take everything and I mean EVERYTHING out of the pantry and organize. I tried to group things together and I checked the expiration dates on everything. I had some things in there with dates going back to 2011! GROSS.

Once I had everything grouped in like categories and purged all the expired items I started putting things back. I realized that I had a ton of baking supplies and other things that were loose in bags and making the pantry look messy so I made use of some mason jars that I had lying around and labels I got on clearance a while ago.

Anything that could be taken out of a bag and put into a container was. And all of those things in baggies in the left picture below are now in more of these OXO Softworks containers. I love how they look and how fresh they keep things so I ordered a set of eight from Amazon to store everything else on the shelf and more cereal we keep on the top shelf. The blue bowl on the left is Sadie’s treat bowl – we had candy and chocolate in a much heavier bowl on the top shelf but I swapped it with a plastic bowl from Target and put it lower so she can reach. So far she’s good and only takes when she’s allowed to!

We went from a slightly organized mess on the left to a much more organized space on the right. And there is room to spare due to all of the items placed in containers and all of the expired items thrown away. And the shelf with the Shakeology bag and other bags is now filled with OXO containers. It makes my little OCD heart happy.

We also have a cabinet above the kitchen pantry that stores travel mugs, a giant stock pot, and some other random crap and it was a disaster.

I wound up moving a lot of the storage items I had in the back to cabinets I have above our fridge, and then moved extra cereal boxes (we buy at BJs) to this area. I also threw out some travel mugs/tumblers and voila – so much neater! Our straws used to also be in our pull out drawer where we keep odds, ends and saran wrap and stuff and they were a constant mess. Having them in this mason jar on top is so much neater!

We also have another pantry down in the den. I use this for overflow items and things we buy in bulk from BJs. It was also a hot mess.

I wound up throwing out a bunch of REALLY expired items, bringing a lot of stuff upstairs and condensing what we had and organizing much better. It looks so much nicer, I have more room for stuff and it’s so much better organized!

  3. I forgot to take a before picture, but my husband and I just purged our basement to try to get ready for the house renovation. We got rid of A LOT of stuff which is great. Some of it was in good shape and I could sell it so it’s nice to have a little extra cash right now.
