Purging My Closets & Valentine’s Day $150 Stitch Fix Giveaway!

I did it! I tackled my first purge task from my home purging plan. This weekend I went through my closets. Here is what they looked like to start with:

We’re lucky that we have wall to wall, floor to ceiling closet space in our bedroom. I went through each section with a plan of attack. The top right section is where I keep bags, shoes, some mementos and blanket scarves. I organized the bags by folding them up nicely and stacking them next to each other instead of just chucking them up there sight unseen. Then I went downstairs to our shoe basket where we chuck all of our shoes by the front door, emptied it (it was overflowing) and put everything back in the right closets. This part was pretty simple! And that Cabbage Patch Doll? It’s actually a Taro Patch Doll that my aunt and uncle brought back from Hawaii for me when I was little.

The top half of my closet on the left side I didn’t need to touch really – I store sweatshirts up there and you can’t see it but there’s a sack of my old stuffed animals up there too.

The bottom left side of the closet I have my dresses and the rest of my scarves (but not winter scarves.) I actually had my wedding dress and a bridesmaids dress in there too but I moved them into our spare bedroom closet to make more room. I then went through my dresses and employed a trick that I learned from Aubrey (I think?)

You take out each of the items in your closet and flip the hangers around so they are hooked around the back of the clothing rod versus the front. Then when you wear the item hanging, you flip the hanger back the right way. This way over time, you can keep track of what you actually wear and don’t wear in your closet! I’ve done this purge to my closet before about two years ago and I’m due again.

I also organized my dresses by style and moved around some long sweaters I had on that side to the other side, and neatened up my scarves and dress pants.

On the other side, I flipped all the hangers around and then also organized my purses that are at the bottom of my closet. That plastic bin holds my nice bags so most of them are in dust bags to protect them.

I did pull a few things off the hangers that I knew off the bat I wasn’t going to wear anymore or (sob) didn’t fit into anymore, but this process definitely helps get rid of things as well!

I know it’s hard to see, but here’s the total before and after! Eventually I want to white wash the walls in the closet (they’re just particle board) to make it brighter and I also want to buy all uniform hangers – maybe these.

  1. My closet is up next week. I know I have a lot in there to get rid of that I don’t wear anymore!

  2. One of the biggest changes I made in my closet was switching all of the hangers so they match (all plastic white). It made such a huge difference. I always hear about the flipping the hangers so you know what you’re actually wearing, but having the hangers facing different ways would drive me out of my mind! Lol.

    • At some point, I want to get all matching hangers! And I honestly don’t mind the hangers being flipped around because they’re serving a purpose. If they were all facing different directions for no reason I’d bug out!

  3. I have a plan to purge using the KonMari Method. I know how hard it can be. This is awesome!

  4. Yes, I use that hanger trick! I found that on Pinterest. You’ve just reminded me to do it again. It really helps because it makes me realize what I don’t wear because of poor fit, i.e. “I won’t wear that today because the arms are too tight but I’ll keep it” – > POSHMARK LISTINGS!

    • I am overdue for a Poshmark listing fest! 🙂 Either that or I bring it into work to see if my coworkers want it – we’re all around the same size so we trade clothes constantly!

  5. Purging and reorganizing is seriously one of my favorite things. Nicely done!

  6. Nice! I just ordered similar hangers. I don’t know why it drives me so crazy not to have matching hangers, but it’s about damn time I got some!

  7. Purging feels so good! We did a massive overhaul right after the holidays and it was amazing. I could totally stand to go through my closet again, though!
I LOVE the hanger trick idea. I need to do that. I know I’m hanging on to some clothes “just because.”

    • I used to do the same with my clothes! And still do… I’m a bit over my ideal weight right now and am definitely holding onto some things that don’t really fit now but I know will… soon? Hopefully? Haha.

  8. My closet needs a major purge/clean/overhaul too! I keep waiting to pitch things until I “lose ALL the baby weight” and I’m just not sure that will ever ever happen. I need to just give it up and then I can buy myself more stuff as a reward if I ever get there!
