A Pennsyltucky Weekend

In case you aren’t down on the lingo, Pennsyltucky is slang for:

…the state names Pennsylvania and Kentucky. It is used to characterize—usually humorously, but sometimes deprecatingly—the rural part of the state of Pennsylvania outside the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia metropolitan areas, more specifically applied to the local people and culture of its mountainous central Appalachian region.

Thanks, Wikipedia! Our friends Tanja and Ryan live in a small town in Pennsyltucky that we try to visit often, but being 6ish hours away it’s become a pretty infrequent journey on our end. We realized it had been over two years (!!) since our last visit and so when they invited us out we said YES!

While I didn’t manage to get a lot of photos of our trip I did manage to take photos at two fantastic restaurants that we ate at. #priorities. On the way up to PA we needed to get dinner so I whipped out my phone and popped open the Yelp app. One of the places that kept showing up was The Plank Pizza Co Beer Parlor in Saddle Brook, NJ.

Flatbread pizzas and over 40 beers on tap? Yes, please! We got in and immediately got to picking out our beer. Dave went for a flight while I stuck with a pint of delicious Bravehorn Scotch Ale by Bolero Snort Brewery. Sadie stuck with milk. 🙂

There are so many different pizzas to choose from (and other main dishes!) The pizzas are served on flatbreads and on wood planks (hence, plank pizza) and are so unique! I ordered the Loaded Potato Pizza – plank pizza with frizzled onions, cheese, bacon, sour cream, and chives. It was messy but amazing! They had a cute kids meal too – a small plank pizza and these HUGE tater tots!

Everything was really good! It gets a bit loud but you can still have conversations. Would love to head back when it’s warmer to sit out in the beer garden!

After dinner, we loaded back into the car and traveled the rest of the way to Pennsylvania! Like I mentioned we had so much fun I barely took any pictures! It was such a nice, low-key weekend with our friends. We did hit up the local bowling alley which Sadie loved! And I loved playing with their kids! #babyfever.

Our friend Tanja dubbed this one, “Lacey the child whisperer” haha! I had all three kids sitting quietly on the couch!

One highlight of the trip (other than spending time with our friends, obviously) was going to Mamie’s! Mamie’s Cafe & Bakery is down the block from our friend’s house and we’re SO glad they moved there! It’s the BEST breakfast and lunch spot. Period. Seriously there are no under 5-star reviews on Yelp!

We went there twice during the weekend – once for lunch and once for breakfast. For lunch, we made it just before they closed and I had a Baklava Latte that was out of this world. Dave had some sort of Chocolate Strawberry Coffee drink (and mine was better!)

I wanted something on the lighter side, so I got the Chicken Florentine Salad. (Dave had a burger called the Super Cheesy Nice and Greasy, so you know what path he went on for his meal!)

When we went back for breakfast I was tempted to get what I had tried before, the Boston Creme Pancakes (OMG they are RIDICULOUS) but decided to get something new instead so I went with the Almond Crunch French Toast. This AMAZING french toast made with brioche bread – OMG it was delicious!

Sadie opted for the Reindeer Pancakes that were technically off the menu but since they were still on the specials chalkboard the lovely ladies of Mamie’s still made them for her. How cute is that?

One great thing about Mamie’s is that you will head home with leftovers! We had BOXES of food wrapped up and I enjoyed eating the leftover Almond Crunch French Toast from my couch. 🙂

I love going to visit this remote (to us) part of PA and hanging out with our friends!! The great food is just an added bonus.

  6. Hah, Pennsyltucky! I grew up in Gettysburg and live in Pittsburgh now, but for a few years I lived in the south. Most people down there pictured Philly when they thought of PA. It was hilarious to describe what most of PA is really like! It looks like you had a great little road trip!

  7. I’m drooling all over my keyboard just looking at this post! And Sadie’s hair is AMAZING! One of these days Mim will get some hair. 😉
