Read it In… October

One chick lit, one contemporary fiction, one book about food and three YA fantasy novels. Those were my reads this month and I would have one more but I’m stuck in a biography that is taking me awhile to get through.

In October I read:

What I Read in October | Perks of Being a JAP |

Neanderthal Seeks Human (Knitting in the City, #1) by Penny Reid. This was a really cute chick-lit read. It did remind me a little bit of Confessions of an Ugly Girl where the main character doesn’t realize how attractive she is, doesn’t understand why the guy wants her, etc., but the story was quick and Janie the main character was very witty. I will probably read the other two books in the series. Overall Rating 4 out of 5.

The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. The very first Jodi Picoult book I read was The Pact. I read it years ago when it was recommended to me by my boyfriend at the time and I loved it. I’m not sure why I don’t read more Jodi Picoult but I got The Storyteller from NetGalley and devoured it. This story really delves into the act of forgiveness and how far a person is willing to go for it. What’s the limit of when you will or will not forgive someone? If someone is sorry for committing heinous acts do you forgive them? Oh, this book gave me all the feels. I know I didn’t really talk about the plot but I don’t want to risk giving anything away since Jodi Picoult is known for her plot twists. Overall Rating 5 out of 5.

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children Boxed Set by Ransom Riggs. First, let’s break down each book within the box set and it’s individual rating:

  • Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – Overall Rating 5 out of 5
  • Hollow City – Overall Rating 5 out of 5
  • Library of Souls – Overall Rating 4 out of 5

With the movie coming out and all the hype surrounding it, I saw the Miss Peregrine books pop up on all social media channels. I wanted to get the hardcover box set because it seemed pretty cool and also something Sadie could have when she’s older. On Goodreads, these books, or at least the first one, seems pretty hit or miss when it comes to reviews. I really liked the books but can definitely understand not enjoying the first one, for example, if you were reading it on its own because it ends so abruptly. I think in order to enjoy the story you need to read all three in a row. I loved the different peculiarities of the children and how Jacob’s own talents first emerge and then take a turn no one expected. The last book in the series received a slightly lower rating than the first two from me due to how the tale wrapped up – it was left a little open ended (perhaps for a fourth book?) and I was left wanting more, which I guess is good for the author.

something to food about: Exploring Creativity with Innovative Chefs by Questlove. Yes, Questlove from The Roots! He is a self-described foodie and has traveled all over the world to enjoy the best food he can find – from high-end cuisine to the small food carts on the corner. In this book he talks to 10 chefs to talk about their creativity and what makes them tick, the food they love and cook and more. I did not realize this book was more of a coffee table book than a normal sized/formatted book and that threw me off. There is some gorgeous photography in there to enjoy and you can really see from this book that Questlove is a true Renaissance man. Overall Rating 3 out of 5.

  1. I really liked the Peregrine’s series, but honestly thought the pictures were kind of corny (I know that’s supposed to be their appeal, but whatever). And I was pretty happy with the ending.

  3. I have the first Peregrine’s book on my Kindle, but weirdly never felt compelled to read it. Now that the movie is coming out, though, I feel like it’s probably time to give them a go?
