Crafty Kid Crafts – Secret Pizza Party Book Activity

I hate to admit but Sadie is addicted to television. She’d watch it 24/7 if we let her and I definitely let her watch more than I should. When it’s nice out we try to make it a habit to turn the TV off after awhile and have her go outside, or play with her toys (which often sit untouched) inside. I’ve been trying to figure out other things to keep her occupied and since she isn’t the best at individual play (also Mommy only has so much patience) I wanted to try something we’d both enjoy.

Luckily, Sadie LOVES to do art projects. I was inspired by two fellow bloggers Andrea and Ashley who did some great activities with their kids involving books and thus our Secret Pizza Party was born!

Sadie LOVES this book and I think it’s really cute too! Secret Pizza Party is written by the same duo as Dragons Love Tacos and it’s about a raccoon who LOVES pizza, but keeps getting chased away because, well, because he’s a raccoon!

First I had to tell Sadie about our project! I wanted to do it in a fun way so I gathered up the following supplies:

The night before our project I cut up the construction paper into triangles, made red and green dots for pizza toppings and then swiped the orange dot marker across the top to make the crust. Before she woke up I taped the pizza slices on the floor and walls leading from her bedroom to the dining room where I had the book displayed. She immediately saw the first pizza slice on the floor and was so excited to play along and see where it led to!

I told Sadie that since Daddy wouldn’t be home for dinner that night we would have a SECRET PIZZA PARTY! (SHH!) She was SO excited. And immediately ran to tell Dave, even though it was a “secret.” Haha.

That night I picked her up from daycare and headed to our favorite pizza place Via Roma to grab our pie. It’s the only pizzeria we will order from!

Now I had grand plans for doing our fun Secret Pizza Party project after our pizza dinner but a wicked sore throat got the best of me. So I decided to tell Sadie what it was, but save it for the next day. She was excited to see that we would be crafting our very own pretend pizzas!!

Fast forward to the next day and it was time for our fun project! For this part you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Cardboard (for the crust of the pizzas)
  • Different color construction paper – whichever colors you need for the toppings you are putting on top of your pizzas!
  • Optional – these trays to create your pizzas on/keep the mess together. (I actually saw these on Andrea’s blog and grabbed them – they are great for arts and crafts!)

I spent the better part of an evening cutting out these pizza toppings shapes. My right thumb really hurt afterward! Maybe in the future, I’ll invest in a Silhouette machine like my pal Aubrey suggested if I keep doing projects like this.

I found most of the shapes online with the exception of the onions – I made those myself in PowerPoint! We had:

  • Onions
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Mushrooms
  • Sausage

I also had red paper that I cut into wiggly triangles for the sauce, and yellow paper that I cut into shreds for cheese. Dave also had the great idea to have raccoon masks, so I cut up the legs of an old pair of sweatpants I was throwing out and voila – we’re raccoons!

Once we had our masks on and all our supplies out we got to work making pizza! Sadie and I worked methodically while Dave tossed “cheese” in the air and determined his was the most realistic looking pizza. Ahem.

Sadie immediately went to town with the leftover pizza I had cut out and made a fourth slice. She loved this project and told me she wanted to do more projects soon.

I really want to be more purposeful about how we play with Sadie at home and how she spends her time so I hope to make this a regular feature on the blog with other projects we do!
