Sadie’s First Day of Preschool!

Timehop and Facebook have been showing me flashbacks all week of Sadie’s first days of daycare over the years but now we’re up to our first day of preschool! (Hold me.) I had seen the cute first-day photos with the chalkboards people made or bought for awhile now but I didn’t want to start doing our own until this year. Heck, I probably would have even waited until kindergarten but I was totally suffering from FOMO.

I, of course, waited until the last minute and Amazon-primed myself some supplies just in the nick of time. IE – I spent Monday night putting this together. I’m happy to report though that it didn’t take much time at all! If you want to do this for your own child you will need:

  • A chalkboard. I bought this one that had great reviews and was the perfect size for what I wanted to put on it.
  • Liquid chalk markers. These came recommended (and they worked great!)
  • Napkins/paper towel.
  • Q-tips.

There are some pre-made boards you can buy that have a ton of fill in the blank spots for a career, favorite food (color, book, movie), height, weight, hopes and dreams and more. I thought about buying a pre-made one but 1) I wouldn’t get it in time and 2) I wasn’t thrilled with all of the options. Height and weight are cute to have on there now but what about when I’m forcing Sadie to take this picture when she’s like, 12 or even 17? Doubt she’d want some of that displayed for Facebook/the world to see.

Now I consider myself to be pretty creative but I did need some help getting started so I turned to Google and Pinterest! I copied the pennant banner idea from multiple first-day chalkboard photos I saw and I knew I wanted spots for her name, the date, the grade she was going into and then favorite color and what she wants to be when she grows up. I didn’t map out anything, just started with her name and let the liquid chalk do the rest!

Don’t be afraid to mess up! I used the paper towel and Q-tips for mistakes! The liquid chalk wipes away easily and the Q-tips will help you clean up any small imperfections.

I think my favorite thing on the board is the little stick figure of Sadie that she insisted I add on. Crazy yellow hair, pink dress and purple shoes. Sounds about right.

This morning was overcast, gray and windy but we trooped outside to take pictures anyway! And here’s where I sob over my big girl. SNIFF.

Sadie is SO PROUD to be in the “big kid” class at her daycare. Her daycare runs from infant to preschool so she’s been there since the beginning. Although she was sad to not have the same teacher as last year (she LOVES Ms. Rebecca!) she was happy to see her friends and she knew the teachers in her classroom from seeing them around the other classes.

Sadie also told me that she wants to wear her cat dress every single day. With her cat shoes. (Dress from Target, shoes from Carters.) I don’t do that type of laundry (she’s lucky she has clean clothes AT ALL) so while I’m glad she LOVES her dress, she’s out of luck on that one!

While I’m not excited for the homework that starts this year I am excited to see how much more she will learn and grow. Her school has been amazing these last four+ years and I’ll be so sad to leave in June! They have done so much for her already – I can’t wait to see how this year turns out.
