Berry Picking at Lewin Farms

I’ve gone apple picking dozens of times. I’ve gone pumpkin picking dozens of times. But what I’ve never done (at least not in my cognizant memories) is gone berry picking. I’ve always wanted to and finally we made the trip out east to pick some delicious berries!

I used this website to decided where to go – we were a little too late for strawberry season but found Lewin Farms that wasn’t too far away from us and still had blueberries and raspberries for the picking!

We first pulled up to their farmstand (photo above) and realized we needed to go a bit further for the berries. Less than two minutes down the road and we were in berry heaven! We walked up to the stand took a handful of pint baskets and headed into the blueberry field.

Once we gently reminded Sadie to only pick the blue blueberries (not the unripened ones) she was a pro, announcing with every pick, “This is a good one!” I had to tell her a few times that she could also eat some – she only wanted to put them in the basket!

I’m trying to be better and get in the photos too, not just take them. If that means a selfie, then be it!

After we had filled our basket with blueberries we headed over to the raspberry field. There were a few different kinds but we stuck with the Nova and Latham varieties – they were smaller but sweeter!

This picture cracks me up! Sadie is totally blissed out, mid-chew! Girl after my own heart!

We didn’t go crazy picking because we didn’t know how we were going to use all the berries. We wound up with a pint of each and I think paid less than $10 total. That is something I loved about Lewin Farms. Some places you go picking you have to pay up front for a bag and then you fill it up. Lewin Farms gave you as many pint boxes as you wanted and then you gave back what you didn’t fill and only paid for what you filled by pound. Perfect for us!

If I would have known better I would have picked more – we DEMOLISHED what we picked within a few days. And by we, I mean me. I ate pretty much all the raspberries myself. Oops.

We really liked Lewin Farms. It was easy to get to, not crowded and also not huge. You could get from one end to the other very quickly and easily which is a huge plus when out with a four year old. They also have different seasons where they allow pick-your-own and we can’t wait to go back in the late summer/early fall for peaches!

After we were done picking we headed back to the farmstead and picked up some fresh produce and other stuff. I got some homemade horseradish that I cannot wait to break into (and the brand is called Holy Schmitt’s which just makes me chuckle) and these beautiful dried flowers that I later found out were called Statice. I love how vibrant they are even when dried out!

Have you gone berry picking this season? Or what’s local to your area that you can go and pick-your-own?

  1. I have never lived somewhere with berry farms. We had raspberries and strawberries growing up, and many people had them in their backyards, but an actual berry farm? Never been. (Ditto apple farm. Or pumpkin patch…I was practically raised in a…warehouse? “Barn” does not make sense in this metaphor…)

    • Warehouse lol. I can’t imagine not having gone to pumpkin patches or apple orchards growing up. I guess it’s just what comes with territory… literally. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. I’ve never been berry picking but have always wanted to try it. There are a few places near me. It looks like so much fun – AND fruitful. (Ba-dum-chhhh!)

  3. My kids got to go blueberry picking at camp. I was jealous! Even Zachary, who doesn’t eat berries, liked it, so we may go back! I love raspberries – I wonder if we can do that around here!
