BFF BeautyCon Summer Box review

It’s been a few months but I finally got my summer BFF BeautyCon Box!

If you need a memory refresh, BFF BeautyCon Box is a quarterly box subscription box. They work with a different curator each season to select the items you receive. It’s not personalized like Stitch Fix, Rocksbox or one of those sites but it’s a different person each box and everyone who subscribes gets that. They select curators that are beauty YouTube stars (or at least that’s the trend I see) and work with them to select loads of awesome stuff to you every three months.

I didn’t feel like this box was as customized to the curator as it was in previous boxes. Maybe that’s just what the curator Kandee Johnson liked? But since last quarter we had weird dolls and stuff I thought this was boring. (I mean for someone with bright red/pink hair? Come on!)

Some highlights of this box were:

  • TWO NYX products. I love NYX! I’m eager to try out the Ombre Lip Duo (even though I got it in a weird Peaches & Cream color.) I may try to exchange it at a local store for something I’d probably wear more. The 2nd NYX product is a Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cashmere. It’s a cool gold color so maybe I’ll rock it for fancy nights out 😉
  • A Too Faced Better Than Sex waterproof mascara. I LOVE my Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara so I was stoked to get the waterproof kind to try.
  • Smashbox Brow Tech Shaping Powder – pretty interested to try this out!
  • Redken Fashion Waves Sea Salt Spray – I tend to stay away from sea salt sprays or beach hair since my hair is pretty coarse to begin with but I’ll give this a shot. Maybe I’ll keep it in my beach bag.

This quarter’s BFF BeautyCon box had over $150 worth of stuff in it and while that’s about $20 more than the spring box I thought the spring box was more fun. I also like when the box includes other things besides makeup products. If I only wanted makeup products I would have kept my Boxycharm subscription up. My first two boxes had a couple of different products included (cute notebooks, keychains, headbands…) but this was only beauty products. If the fall box is more of the same I’d probably cancel.

I may be the minority here but I hate when a subscription box comes with a gift card. I am pretty sure I’ve never actually used one that I’ve received through a subscription box and also they’re usually from pretty random brands. The Bethany Mota BFF box had some good brands like Nike but I don’t shop there normally so it went to waste. This box has a gift card for “The Edit by Seventeen.” It’s an online store with all favorites from Seventeen magazine editors. Sigh.

ALSO – this really annoyed me. I got an email back in like late May/early June that I needed to update something with my billing. Every time I went on the website to take care of it the site wouldn’t update. So I emailed customer service and they said their site was going through updates and I should come back to update my info like two weeks later. I emailed again asking if they could just update my info on the back end and they said no, sorry. Like, how weird is that? I was afraid I wouldn’t get the summer box because of this but they assured me I would and obviously I did but it was a weird inconvenience, especially in this day and age.

Comments

  1. I CANNOT STAND getting gift cards in subscription boxes. They’re a cheap cop-out because they’ve GOT to know that most people don’t use them – so they give us something “free” but ultimately save a ton of money by sending us credit at a store we’ll never shop at. Ugh.

  2. This kind of box (beauty things) would give me MASSIVE anxiety…but seriously. I get to nervous about trying new things, and especially about spending money on new beauty things, because I will invariably not love it as much as the last version I had….one of my biggest pet peeves is stupid makeup companies that discontinue the shadow/mascara/whatever in the 4 or 5 months since I bought it last. STOP CHANGING THINGS!

….yeah, so….this is not a subscription I’d ever be cool with. Ha!

  3. Seems a bit like ipsy, but with more products in it? It doesn’t sound like you loved it this time though!

  4. This is a good box! I love NYX too and have looked at those lip duos before. I would love to try that mascara too. I usually only buy drugstore, but if I know that something is really that good, I don’t mind spending the extra money.

  5. I sincerely HATE boxes that include gift cards. I know that they say it’s always a “bonus” item, but they’ve never had any value to me. That said, I was looking for a new beauty box subscription, and I think that I might give this one a go.

    • Give it a shot! Just keep in mind that usually there are non-beauty items included as well. Another good one that I just stopped because my makeup collection was getting out of control is Boxycharm.
