Four Days in Athens, Greece (Pt 3 – Hydra, Poros & Aegina)

If you’re just catching up to our trip to Athens, Greece, you can read the recaps here:

Before I left for Greece a client of mine had recommended this one-day cruise that takes you to three local islands – Hydra, Poros & Aegina. Because we would be in Athens the entire time of our trip and not headed to the bigger islands we thought this sounded awesome and booked it.

We booked through www.athensonedaycruise.com and the price included lunch on the boat and we paid for transportation to the boat. We weren’t staying at the hotel anymore but used that as our point of pick up. We booked the trip for a Sunday (Father’s Day!) but in retrospect maybe we shouldn’t have picked a weekend. The boat was PACKED and with two teen tour groups. Ugh. It was a struggle to get a seat but we lucked out and found some deck chairs in the front of the boat that we snagged. (And forewarning – I think this post may have the most photos of the Greece posts! Sorry in advance/enjoy!)

Our first stop was Hydra. We only really got to see the Port of Hydra and it was gorgeous!

We also took a mule ride around the town! Mainly for Sadie who wanted to ride a “donkey” but it was cute. For some reason the guy put Sadie and Dave on the same mule and me on a separate one… I figured they’d put the two of us together leaving Dave on his own. The poor, pool mule that had to carry Sadie AND Dave. Haha!

It was REALLY hard to get photos of the town as we were on the mules but I did manage to catch a few! I loved the brightly colored doors, flowers and tiny streets!

View as we were leaving Hydra for our next stop – Poros!

One thing I didn’t like about the cruise is that we got very little time to spend at each island. Like less than two hours at each place so I didn’t feel like you really got to experience the islands or relax and spend a good amount of time doing anything. It was fun, don’t get me wrong, I just wish we had longer.

At Poros as we pulled into port:

The main attraction in Poros seemed to be climbing to the Clock Tower – so that’s what we did! You climb a LOT of steps but are rewarded with an amazing view.

And this is where Dave and Sadie like to give me heart attacks. I am TERRIFIED of heights so I stayed down below but Danger Baby (as we used to call her) was right up there with Daddy. (VOM.)

And that’s literally all we saw of Poros – told you our time was short! Next up we headed to Aegina where we had booked an excursion to go to a private beach for just under two hours. It was worth it! The beach itself was very rocky but the water was crystal clear and Sadie (and I) had a blast hunting for seashells.

And then we were back on the boat headed to Athens. Overall we had a fantastic time and I would recommend this one-day cruise to anyone. BUT be aware that your time on each island is VERY limited and also the boat is packed – if you weren’t early getting back on board you risked not finding a table/seat as people were keen to save seats and take chairs away from other tables to fit their group.

Next recap – the Roman Agora!
