My Makeup Routine and a Giveaway!

I’ve only been really into makeup for the last year or so. Before that I had one little basket of makeup in my drawer and sometimes only applied concealer before leaving the house. Fast forward to now and I don’t leave the house without at least five products on my face and my makeup basket has exploded to two fill two drawers and spill over into other parts of my bathroom as well. (This isn’t necessarily a good thing.)

I’m mainly a drugstore makeup kind of girl but I also get some higher end products from time to time, often through subscription boxes. A while ago I did a post about the products I had begun to use when I first got heavily into makeup and I thought it would be fun to see what had changed since April 2015.

(And keep reading – there’s an AMAZING giveaway at the end!)

Daily Makeup Routine | Perks of Being a JAP | www.perksofbeingajap.com

These aren’t the ONLY items I use but the ones I find myself reaching for on a day to day basis.

I suffer majorly from bags under the eyes and fight the constant battle to try and get rid of them (and yes, I know about the Rodan + Fields product that supposedly works miracles but I just can’t drop $60 on that right now.) I have a ton more under eye products than these two but I use these the most.

1. Natura Science Labs Vanish Eye Cream for Dark Circles and Puffiness – I bought this on a whim and it has a nice cooling sensation on my skin after I put it on which I interpret to mean its doing something to my eye bags. Does it? No idea. Whatever, it feels nice and it is only $7.

2. SEPHORA COLLECTION Instant Depuffing Roll-On Gel – Unfortunately it looks like this is out of stock on the Sephora website. It’s a nice roller-ball type of under eye gel. The one downside is that it takes awhile to dry but I do see/feel a difference in my eye puffiness afterwards! (Maybe a teensy one?)

After I finished my bareMinerals Prime Time Foundation Primer I was in the market for a new one and I’ve tried two to date that I like. I switch back and forth between:

3. Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer – I got a mini size of this primer in a Too Faced kit I bought from Sephora and I really liked it. It has a yummy smelling coconut scent and is like a thin lotion consistency. Sometimes it dries a bit tacky so I just rub it in but overall I like it for my face.

4. Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Travel Primer – This was the first primer I tried after my bareMinerals ran out and it’s great. It’s definitely a thick formula so use it with a light hand. I have a backup of this waiting in my linen closet and I only get the travel sizes because it lasts a long time.

Onto the rest of my face!

5. COVERGIRL Ready, Set Gorgeous Concealer in Fair – In my last makeup post I swore by the Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer, Brightener. I have to say now I’m a convert and I LOVE the COVERGIRL Ready, Set Gorgeous Concealer! I like the applicator better than Maybelline and the coverage is better too. I may get next shade darker for the summer months – we’ll see how tan I get!

6. ULTA Automatic Eyeliner – I was using this back in my last post and I’m still using it as my main eyeliner! I honestly only wear it in the brown shade – I’m not big on heavy eyeliner unless I’m getting all decked out. I also don’t use liquid eyeliner because it terrifies me. 😉

7. Makeup Geek Blush Compact in Rendezvous – I had heard about Makeup Geek through the various YouTube channels I subscribe to but had never ordered anything. Then one day this blush came in my BoxyCharm and I immediately understood all the hype. This is quite possibly the most pigmented blush I have ever owned. When I first put it on I did as if it were one of my usual drugstore blushes and I had to wipe half of it off! It’s a gorgeous color and has a great formula. The compact is super sleek too!

8.  Cover Girl Ready, Set Gorgeous Liquid Foundation – This is still my holy grail liquid foundation as it was in April 2015. I switch shades in the summer but it goes on smooth, isn’t cakey and I don’t feel like it sits on my face in a heavy way. I just tried a cushion liquid foundation that is not full coverage like I consider this one to be but while I like the formula I don’t like the applicator of that (its like, a makeup round) so maybe one day I’ll find an in between?

9. & 10.  NYX Cosmetics Butter Gloss in Peaches and Cream with NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in Milan – these two have been my warm weather pop of color. I usually go for more muted tones or darker colors but when its warm I love putting on the matte lip cream and then just a swipe of the butter gloss for a little extra something. I would definitely say that NYX Cosmetics make my favorite drug store lip products.

11. Maybelline New York Volum’ Express The Falsies Push Up Drama Washable Mascara – I tend to go back and forth between mascaras depending on my mood but my fallback one is this Maybelline Push Up Drama one. I love the applicator! It’s one of those rubbery ones and the application is so, so smooth.

And now for the exciting stuff – the giveaway! I get a lot of makeup products through subscription boxes and the like and some just don’t work for me. Instead of throwing it away or having it just sit around my house I’ve decided to do a giveaway!

I am giving away $500 worth of makeup!
Yes – $500! Trust me, I checked!

  1. I love the Maybelline “Fit Me” foundation, and also pressed powder. That foundation works so well for me, and the powder matches tones perfectly. I use Revlon mascara, but I use the normal, non-waterproof kind because I hate taking off eye makeup! I need to work on that, because my regular mascara does smear by the end of the day. I have a variety of eye shadow that I enjoy, but today I used an Almay one that’s a bit shimmery. 🙂

    • I keep eyeballing the Fit Me line but haven’t taken the plunge yet. If you decide to try waterproof mascara you should get Micellar water to take your makeup off with – it works like a charm!

  2. Loving those NYX lip products, I’ll definitely be adding them to my to-buy list! I should really do a similar post. On a daily basis I wear foundation, concealer, blush, mascara, eyeliner and a lip product of some sort. I’ve recently added a primer and highlighter into the routine but I do skip those things some days.

    • NYX is amazing! They have such a wide variety of lip products (and other makeup too) but OMG their lip stuff! Also check out their liquid suede line.

  3. Someone on Instagram recommended NYX to me, & I’m loving their lipsticks, too! I use an Aveeno BB cream, L’Oreal concealer, Sephora spray-on foundation, a Cover Girl powder compact, Urban Decay primer & liquid eyeliner, & some weird brand of mascara that I got in a subscription box that apparently you can only buy in, like, Australia, damn it. Pretty sad about THAT one. I’m always looking to try new products but rarely want to bust out the money for them, so I’d love to win this!

    • NYX is the shizz. How is the Urban Decay primer? I haven’t thought to try that one but I do want to get my hands on the UD setting spray – I’ve heard grear things abut that one.

  4. Sandhra John says

Wow…so awesome.. I don’t wear makeup that much because I have just a few items in my vanity.. But my must have is a black eyeliner and a lipstick.. Thanks for the opportunity.. I hope this giveaway is international.. I am from India..

  5. Thanks for the chance!

  6. Love reading about great products to try!

  7. I’ve been learning about makeup through ipsy. I like trying new products but I still don’t remember to use makeup on the regular!

  8. Girl you have an intense makeup routine. Or I have a lazy one. Not sure.

  9. I’m just starting to get into a makeup routine – it us nice to have a full face of products!

  10. The Bare Minerals primer is my absolute favorite thing in the world. It’s so silky. I love how it makes my face feel. I only have the tiny tester bottle, but will likely buy more soon. I’ve never been good at branching out with make up. It’s always felt too expensive to just try new things. This is an amazing idea you had with all your extra stuff. Maybe I’ll start doing that with my VoxBoxes (assuming I get more of them).

  11. Bilqees Bano says

    hello there ,
I love to wear eye liner & babylips in summer.

  12. A must for me is my moisturizer since I have very dry skin, my bb cream with spf, ELF concealer, and lashes. I change brands every now and then to try out new things. I’m always on the look out for good quality products with ingredients that won’t make my skin any worse, but will help heal it and keep it clear and fresh looking. Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂

  13. Shahreen says

My go-to makeup arsenal includes Bare Minerals primer and foundation, Covergirl Lashblast mascara, Maybelline Linewear eyeliner, eye shadow (Too Faced pallettes are my fave), and some lip gloss (LOVE the NYX butter gloss you use too!) I’d love to branch out and try more stuff, though, so thanks for this chance to do so with this giveaway!

  14. I’m glad I’m not the only one just getting into makeup -I’m 30 this year and never really bothered, but now I have three kids and eek the lines! All of a sudden my complexion has changed completely! I need to go hunting for some sort of anti-aging cream and an easy foundation or coverup. Wish me luck!

  15. Smashbox Photo Finish is just one of those primers you keep coming back to… it did take me until this phase in life to like makeup and wear it every day, but now I prefer to wear a little whenever I’m out!

  16. Stephanie Grant says

My go to has to be my Kat Von D eyeliner pen in black, I wear it every time I leave the house even when I don’t have “time” to do my makeup!

  17. Heather E. says

I don’t wear makeup daily since my bike is my main transportation (and it gets hot). When I do wear makeup, I focus mainly on my brows and eyes. I love L’Oreal’s Brow Stylist Prep & Shape Pro Kit. It’s a little expensive for what it is, but that’s my go-to product for brows at the moment. For my eyes, I’ve been using the NYX Dream Catcher Palette (Golden Horizons), Elf Gel Liner and Maybelline Great Lash Mascara (a classic).
