Anniversary Date – A Trip to Greenport, LI

Dave and I celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary on Sunday, March 20th. (Awwww.) Honestly at this point we’re so not into the whole celebration thing for Valentine’s Day, not really for Anniversaries… maybe we’re just not romantic? DO WE NOT LOVE EACH OTHER? AHHH!

Dave threw out the idea of heading out to Greenport for the day. We hadn’t been out there yet and there is also a brewery we haven’t been to. Sold! It took us about an hour and 15 minutes to get there and when we arrived we were absolutely starving. BUT we wanted to hit up Greenport Harbor Brewing Company first in case they also had food too.

The brewery does not have food by the way. Turns out I read the wrong review on Yelp and was looking at their Peconic location instead of Greenport. Whoops!. We figured beer would soothe our hunger for awhile so we shared a flight. This is the first brewery I’ve been to where they didn’t serve the flight all at once. The bartender served us one at a time. Was a little odd! But the beers were good and the place was pretty much empty so it wasn’t like we had any wait time. Also weird, they had some random benches in the middle of the room but no tables and no stools at the bar. Almost like they don’t want you to sit and stay? Maybe because it’s a seasonal town it gets nuts during the warm months so they want to deter people from taking up space all day.

The beers were all really good and we tried one that wasn’t on the flight list and the bartender gave it to us for free instead of charging us for the extra tasting which was really nice of him. After all that beer we asked for a recommendation for lunch and were given a couple of places to go but decided to hit up a new one that was mentioned called Industry Standard, located just a few minutes away.

At first we were a bit put off when we walked in and there was not a soul in the restaurant. Then we realized it was off season so it made sense that it would be empty. We started off ordering some more beer! They had some on tap that we hadn’t seen before so of course we had to try them. Then we got down to food! I’m sad that I did not take a picture of the menu so I could remember exactly what we had and you can’t get the info on their website because their menu changes so often! So bear with me as I do a horrible job of describing the food.

For an appetizer we shared this amazing escargot dish that was served on top of hearty bread and was almost like a stew it was so hearty and thick. And incredibly rich – in a good way! We couldn’t help but order this dish – we almost never get to have escargot and we both love it!

I got a rice bowl as my main and it had delicious Asian-fried chicken, vegetables and a tangy sauce. (I wish I could remember everything that was included in it!) Dave ordered a different spin on a chicken gyro and while he liked it he claimed my dish the winner.

For dessert we shared the donut ice cream sandwich. How could you resist? It was amazing and the perfect way to finish our meal. I mean, just look at that thing!

After lunch we decided to walk around a little and popped into some of the stores. Not everything was open because it was off season – something we didn’t think about before we decided to head out to Greenport! I’d like to go back in the warmer months when everything is open but we still had a nice time and made it to the water for a photo op.

The drive back home is along the Long Island Wine Trail and we didn’t stop in a single winery. Nope – we stopped in Twin Stills Moonshine Tasting Room – a distillery! How could you not when it stands out among all of the wineries? We noticed that there was plenty of outdoor space for warmer weather and were pleasantly surprised by the bright, clean interior of the tasting room.

Everyone was super friendly as we sat down at the bar and took care to explain to us about the moonshine, how they serve it (in little clay cups from Portugal) and give us a drink card to use at home to make drinks from the various moonshines. We then talked to who we found out was the owner and when I asked how long they had been open he said 1 day! They had their grand opening the day before and had experienced their first slow period since that party.

We did a flight of moonshine – you get to pick three varieties from their menu and each one was better than the other. (And we tasted all of them, paying extra for the additional ones. It was worth it.) We wound up going home with a bottle of the Strawberry moonshine and a bottle of the Apple Pie moonshine.

And after that we were spent. And then went out to dinner with Sadie and my mother-in-law who was nice enough to hang with Sadie so we could spend our anniversary together. 🙂
