Sadie’s “Little Miss Sunshine” 1st Birthday Party!

I’m not a huge party planner, which is hysterical since I plan events for a living. I can plan those corporate functions to a T, but when it comes to planning a social event, I get lost in all the little details and ultimately wind up doing half of what I originally planned. Sadie’s 1st birthday party? Pretty much that.

However – it was a lot of fun. We had a ton of people over in our backyard, and thankfully the weather held up otherwise we would have postponed the party to another day. With almost 40 people invited, there was no way everyone would be in our house!

The theme was Little Miss Sunshine. You know, those little books we all had when we were little?

Why that for a 1st birthday party theme? Why not! Sadie isn’t in to anything in particular, unless you count her obsession with stuffed animals as something, and shes always a happy, smiley little girl, so that’s what I went with. Let’s also use the term “theme” loosely, because beyond a matching color scheme, I didn’t really do anything else around the book or character.

The invitation:

I always have grand plans to make an invitation with Tiny Prints or one of those websites, but the prices make me sick. I went with Etsy seller Made With Love instead and ordered a digital file of the invitation, which my BFF Allison printed for me at a super reasonable price. And the seller Jessica is super easy to work with – I’d order from her again in a heartbeat!

We decorated the yard with yellow and orange streamers, matching balloons and tablecloths, and that was pretty much the extent of the theme haha. My sister-in-law Adrienne was amazing and made up a bunch of trays of food for us, and we barbecued everything else.

I did create two things (the night before the party, and the morning of, with the help of my friend Tanja!)

Amazing to see how she’s changed over the year! Sniff, sniff.

The Little Miss Sunshine book, and a book I made of all the blog posts I wrote for each of Sadie’s monthly updates.

For the book, I just printed out all the blog posts using FireShot and stuck them in some sheet protectors, binding the whole thing with ribbon and throwing in some fancy scrapbooking paper and letting from my scrapbooking days.

And of course, here is the birthday girl herself!

What a diva!

She LOVES those sunglasses, a gift from Tanja and Ryan.

Sadie's party

Sadie’s cake came from Sugar Rush, a local bakery. (The owners/bakers were featured on Cupcake Wars!) Let’s not discuss how I was getting majorly teary-eyed while everyone was singing “Happy Birthday” to my baby toddler. EMO-TIONAL.

The main cake was chocolate and vanilla layered cake, with cannoli cream filling (mmmmmm) and whip cream frosting. It was amazing. Sadie had her own little smash cake, and at first she was a little cautious and weary, but by the end, she was totally into the chocolate.

Wait, what? I can put my first right in there? Are you sure Mom?

Ohhh… this is good…

CHOCOLATE HANDS!

Needless to say I had to dunk my child in the tub after her fun with the cake. I also had a super cute birthday hat made for Sadie from Etsy seller Sunshine Daydream Creations… and in my crazed state during the party, forgot to put it on her until much later in the day. FAIL. But here are some cute iPhone pictures of her with the hat.

Tried to get one good picture of the three of us without her pacifier… sadly this was the best, and neither of us are looking at the camera! Haha.

Happy family!

While for me, it was a very overwhelming, hectic day, it was a great party for my little girl. She had a blast, and fell asleep in my arms by 7pm! (She also only had one nap, so that probably helped.) Now her 2nd birthday? That’ll be a very, VERY small affair.

All the photos from her birthday (until my camera died) are here.
