Oatmeal: I’ve been doing it wrong…

Up until recently, I hated oatmeal. I mean HATED. I only ate it when I was very, very, VERY sick, and even then, it was more for comfort than anything else. But then, the other day, I wasn’t feeling too hot and stopped by one of the many deli/cafe/whatever-you-call-thems that are all over the city, and picked up some steel cut oatmeal. From the different toppings, I chose brown sugar and granola. I took the cup of warmth on my sickly way, and headed up to my office.

After sitting down, and grumbling to my coworker about how crappy I felt and how I hate oatmeal but was going to eat it anyway, I took a bite… and immediately ate my words. It was DELICIOUS! Holy crap. Clearly I had been doing oatmeal wrong this whole time. I mean, you can’t compare gritty, runny, instant oatmeal with crappy fake fruit flavoring to the thick and chewy deliciousness of steel cut. And now… I’m obsessed! So far I’ve only had the brown sugar/granola variety, but I’ve been pinning my little heart out with oatmeal recipes.

 

 

 

 

I’ve also yet to try overnight oats, but it’s on my list to try soon! Are you an oatmeal fan? What do you put in yours?

  1. oh i love oatmeal! i tend to add brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and bananas. or blueberries. or both. also, baked oatmeal is definitely a delicious thing to try as well, so so tasty.

  2. Oatmeal goes in waves for me. I am either an Apples & Cinnamon or Maple Brown Sugar kind of gal. Maybe some strawberries or dried cranberries if I’m feeling wild.

    I’ll eat it every morning for like two weeks, then I won’t eat it for months. Hence the three boxes of it on top of my fridge right now! Maybe I need to try some tomrorow!

  3. Sometimes I love it, sometimes not so much. It tends to be my favorite when I’m not feeling so well and of course with some butter and brown sugar ๐Ÿ™‚ I love it in my cookies and muffins, though! I suppose that is not the healthiest way for me to eat it, eh?

  4. I love oatmeal! My fave is 1/3 cup oats microwaved with 1 cup water (high for 2 min in my powerful microwave). Add 1/3 cup craisins and 1-2 tablespoons peanut butter (smooth or crunchy- mix it in). Delicious! I take it to work and eat it at my desk. I have tried overnight oats and just wasn’t a fan, unfortunately.

  6. My latest favorite combo is apples (cooked in cinnamon), honey, cinnamon, and peanut butter. LOVE it.

  7. Overnight oats are the best thing ever! I use 1/2 cup each of oatmeal, almond (or soy) milk and vanilla Greek yogurt with a healthy pinch of cinnamon. I put that in the fridge overnight and in the morning, I add in whatever I have on hand (usually bananas and some kind of berry) and maybe even some dark chocolate chips. I top it off with some honey and voila! A delicious and filling breakfast.

  8. Almonds, cocoa, peanut butter, banana, a little brown sugar and chia seeds. YUM. You need to add these things.

  9. Yep, I adore oatmeal. I’ve made steel cut in my crock pot overnight but most often I just do quick oats. My favorite things to add are cherries and almonds (and maybe a few chocolate chips on top), but apples and raisins are a close second.
