I have some weird food habits

I once wrote about my finicky food issues (and was relieved that I wasn’t the only one!) But it doesn’t end there. Oh no! The weirdness continues! In addition to having major dislikes, and stipulations about how my food is plated, I also eat certain things in particular ways…

  • Double Stuf Oreos – First of all, why waste your time with regular Oreos? Paltry. I only deal in Double Stuf. And when I eat four one, first I twist off one of the cookie wafers and eat that. Then I scrape off the creme filling with my top teeth. Once that’s consumed, I eat the second wafer.
  • Cucumbers – I will eat an entire cucumber in one sitting. BUT, first I have to peel it, lay out a paper towel, sprinkle salt on the paper towel, and then roll the cucumber back and forth over the salt. (I’m SO WEIRD.) Then I proceed to eat my way around the cucumber, taking bites from the sides until I have a little column of cucumber seeds left in the middle, and then I eat then. Repeat as necessary until the entire cucumber is devoured.
  • Dunkin Donuts Iced Coffee – No ifs, ands or buts,I must drink my iced coffee with a tall straw. Doesn’t matter that I get a medium iced coffee – the small straw does not cut it. If we go through the drive-thru, and they hand me the iced coffee with a short straw… it just doesn’t taste as good. ITS A PROBLEM PEOPLE!
  • Microwave popcorn – Must be poured into a bowl, or if no bowl is available (like at work) then the top wall of the bag must be cut away. Why? So I don’t get the goopy butter residue from the top inside of the bag on the back of my hand. Gross.
  • Hard Boiled Eggs – I chop them up, removing the yolk from the whites first, and then sprinkle with salt. Here’s where it gets weird – I put a scoop of cream cheese on the plate, and eat every piece of egg white with a little shmear of cream cheese. I DON’T KNOW.

Don’t even get me started on the sandwiches Dave makes me for lunch for work. It was a step-by-step process teaching him how to properly make my sandwich. We may have to post a tutorial for everyone.

Now that I’ve disclosed that makes me a food weirdo, I know you’ve got some tics of your own to share. Spill the beans!

  1. -I only like the original red bag of Skittles. I eat the greens and yellows together, reds and purples together, and save the oranges for last. My fav.

-I make Lean Pockets (Pepperoni Pizza), cut them in half, scoop out and eat the insides with a fork, then eat the outer crust.

-I like pepperoni and pineapple pizza and calzones. It’s way better than ham/pineapple.

-I don’t like eating apples by biting into them. I cut slices instead. I think it has to do with squirting juice, which I find to be awkward and uncontrollable. I like control.

Oh, and I love Spam Musubi. It reminds me of my childhood, and vacations to Hawaii. And yes, I know, it’s disgusting. But it’s delicious. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_musubi

  2. I totally feel you on the microwave popcorn. I hate reaching inside of the bag.

I eat a lot of PBJ sandwiches, but I guess I can’t technically call them sandwiches. I take two pieces of bread, put peanut butter and jelly on each piece, and eat them separately. An open-faced sandwich? It makes me feel like I’m eating two of something I really love. Oh, and it has to be strawberry jelly. None of that grape bullshit.

    • Dave is with you on the strawberry jelly thing – he will not eat grape. But I love that you eat the pieces of the sandwich separately. BTW – I couldn’t tell you the last time I ate a PB&J sandwich. Like, couldn’t even name the year.

  3. Agreed on going straight for the Double Stuf! And yep, I like to eat them that way too. Although sometimes I do enjoy it simply fully assembled. lol

I also agree on the goopy interior of the popcorn bag although I never plan ahead and pour it into a bowl.

I’m with Aubrey on the apple thing.

And like to eat Reese cups in a spiral fashion. When I’m really dedicated I’ll go around the very top and get the tips of the chocolate from the crimped sides. Then work on the chocolate around the outside of the peanut butter and then finally the center, yes still in a spiral fashion – and sometimes I’ll even peel off the thin layers of chocolate so I’m just left with the peanut butter!

  4. Oh man, I know I have quite a few but I’m not sure if I’ll remember ’em all for this comment. (It’s a busy day!)

I love SALT. Lots and lots of salt, especially sea salt. Lately, if it ain’t sea salt, it ain’t goin’ on my food. I know, salt is bad.

I pick apart my food a LOT. Like, if I have mini meatballs (so good) and some BBQ sauce, I tear them into pieces and eat them that way. They’re MINI. I don’t know why I do this!

I’ll make plain pancakes, microwave bacon, stuff the bacon on the pancakes and eat ’em like that.

I NEED creamer in my coffee.

I NEED ice in my water.

    …and more. I know there’s more!

  5. I put pretzels in my Ramen. I don’t eat Ramen very much any more, but yeah, more salt. It’s actually nasty if I think about it- but oh so tasty.

Different colors of candy go on different sides of my mouth.

  6. When I eat Reese’s I eat all the chocolate off and then eat the peanut butter fillings. But as they say… there’s no wrong way to eat a Reese’s!

  7. I cannot eat hard-boiled eggs or really any kind of eggs that aren’t scrambled hard – like, HARD – & I dip my Oreos in water. FOR STARTERS.

  8. I’m with you on the Oreos and feel the same way about creamy peanut butter – waste of time!

I like my pasta, sauce and meatballs cold, mustard on my sandwich round has to go in a spiral, but on regular bread it gets squiggled, purple beats out any other flavor of candy or frozen ice product, I can not eat any sort of wet bread.

  9. I am SO intrigued by that cucumber trick and the hard-boiled egg thing. Cream cheese! Cream cheese makes everything more awesome!

I have to disagree on the Oreo thing though. I don’t like double-stuffed, because I like the cookie better than the cream. However, I always HAVE to have milk with Oreos, and I dip them in until my fingers barely touch the milk, hold it there for long enough for them to get a little soggy, and then I could eat the whole box.

  10. Ha, I need to do a post like this soon…. I definitely have some weird ways of eating certain foods too!

  11. I’m 100% with you on the Oreo situation. no point in regular ones and I eat mine the same way (though I will sometimes dunk them, depending on my mood).

When I eat my dinner I like to have a little bit of everything; not all on my fork at the same time mind you, but I don’t eat (for example) my burger first, then my fries. I will have some burger, finish that bite, a few fries, etc. Some people think this is weird, especially my husband as he eats each food group on his plate in its entirety before he moves onto the next (this is weird to me).

I like tea, but only peppermint tea. When it comes to eating kabobs I use a fork and don’t eat any of it off the stick.

  12. You are totally right about Double Stuff. That is the jam. Why eat regular oreos. I turn the top cookie and try to separate it so that no filling is on it (thus leaving all filling for the other side) and then eat the plain cookie before going in for the ultimate indulgence, the other side. It’s just my process.

  13. The Bro-In-Law says

Okay, I scoop out an egg roll (cabbage and things, idk) I then shove boneless sparerib tips into the crusty fried egg roll shell, squeeze in the duck sauce from the packet and enjoy. Prob just a fat-guy thing.

    • “Prob just a fat-guy thing.” That’s the excuse for half the things Dave eats, and how he eats them (combining salsa and chips in a bowl, crushing them and eating with a spoon. VOM)
