Hurricane Update

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are fine.

I live in Long Island, not too far from the water, but not in an evacuation zone. We lost power around 1pm yesterday, and after watching a huge tree fall in our street we decided to go to my sister-in-law’s house five minutes away who still had power. They lost power around 4:30am, and as of now, we don’t know when we will get power back. During Hurricane Irene last year (we were still living in the Bronx) our neighbors told us they didn’t get power back until five days later.

As for now, we are at my parents house in Queens who never lost power, and I will be working from home even though my office is open tomorrow. The trains and subways still aren’t running, and I will not be attempting to drive into the city.

We were very lucky. There are downed trees and power lines all over our neighborhood, and boat owners are lucky if they are coming back to a boat in one piece. Long Beach, which is a major beach community not too far from us was horribly affected, and residents may not be able to get back to their homes for weeks due to contaminated waters.

One of my bosses lives in the Rockaways, and he and his neighbors suffered major losses. Water went up the 1st floor of his house, all cars in the neighborhood are ruined, and he told me he kayaked for a mile during the storm to get his dog out of the hurricane.

We were very lucky. The worst that happened was my sister-in-law’s trampoline outside getting ripped from it’s ties and landing on their neighbor’s garage. No one was hurt and there was no damage.

I also don’t like that I already had a “hurricane” category on this blog, and that I can use it for a second time.

I have pictures to post, but right now I just want to get some work done, and go to sleep.
