20SB’s Blog Carnival – A Letter to Myself…

We’re celebrating 20 Something Bloggers‘ 5th birthday with a Blog Carnival! The topic: “Write a letter to yourself five years ago. What have you accomplished? What do you regret? What are you most proud of? How has your life and/or your blog evolved in the last five years? What do you wish you could tell yourself five years ago?” I joined the executive board in writing letters to ourselves on TwentyTwenty, but wanted to expand on mine more here.

Dear Lacey of five years ago:

You’re 23, soon to be 24-years-old and have been out of college for awhile now. Don’t worry about not working in journalism like you planned – it’s not a field you would want to be in a few years from now anyway, due to the economy and digital media. It’s okay though, the job you have now in corporate event planning will lead to great things in your career down the road. It’s been a little bit of a bumpy ride, but you’ve been there for almost five years now, and have definitely proven yourself and come out on top.

You’ve finally stopped dating military boys, that was never a good idea in the first place now, was it? Your family is thrilled that your new boyfriend is local and stable in both career and life in general. And guess what? You wind up moving in with him to an apartment in the Bronx and then in a few more years, you two get married. 🙂 You had a little bit of a rough patch in between, but you made it through. It’s hard to believe that in just another short two years you’ll be parents to an adorable little baby girl named Sadie.

Oh yes, Sadie. She’s amazing. Only two months old right now, but it’s hard to imagine life without her. Parenting is hard, don’t get me wrong. Although you sometimes joke about selling her to the gypsies (is that even a thing?) you love her a ridiculous amount. Doesn’t hurt that she’s insanely cute.

Some of your friends may change over the next few years, but that’s more than okay – the new ones you make, and the ones you’ve had for forever will really be all you need. Oh and this little blog you’ve been writing in for the last few months? It’ll be one of the few hobbies you’ve stuck with (ever) and you’ll make so many amazing friends from it. Consider yourself lucky – your job allows you to travel which means you’ve met a lot of these great bloggers, now friends, in person. It’s really an amazing community. And you’ll get so many great opportunities from writing here, your little slice of the internet. Keep it up!

Stick with it kid, it turns out you’re doing something right after all!

28, soon to be 29-year-old, Lacey

  1. This is a really happy letter. I am 29 now and am just getting involved in nonprofit fundraising and event planning. My company’s new CEO is grooming me and it’s been a cool thing that I never thought I would do either. I always wanted to be a teacher! 😉

  2. I plan events, too. 23-year old Me didn’t see that coming. I, too, thought I’d be either a journalist or in PR. But I started planning events my freshman year of college and realized that I love it! Good for you, though. Looks like 5 years led to many firsts! Congrats on your new little one!
