On Being Healthy(er)

I went to my first bikram yoga class today (hot yoga) and I am in LOVE.  Holy hell do I feel good.  (And now I can cross that off my Life List!!)  When you first walk into the classroom it’s literally like walking into the inner depths of hell.  I think I saw the temp clocked at 98 degrees!?!  But man oh man, I feel so loose (twss), and just… GOOD.  My back and neck pain melted away, the tension in my shoulders is gone, and it didn’t hurt that the instructor was playing Florence + the Machine as his background music.  😉  I was dripping with sweat when I walked out of that class, and made a mental note for next to bring a plastic bag with me for my wet clothing.  Gross.  Also made a note to bring an extra pair of underwear as well.  Forgot to do that tonight, and uhh… I went commando.  Which was fine, but I’d like to not have to go that route again.  (Good thing I had leggings and not shorts!)

I can see myself sticking with yoga a lot longer than I’ve stuck with the gym.  Even in a regular vinyasa class, I just feel the work out so much more than if I were hitting a treadmill, or doing training or some kind.  Like it’s less wear and tear on my body, and more strengthening and toning. I think the only deterrent would be the cost, but my studio seems to run deals and specials pretty often.  And its on my way home from work, so it’s not an out of the way trip.  (Just cant really go on the weekends, unless I want to schlepp into the city!)  OH and I also got the Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown DVD.  For less than $9 on Amazon, I couldn’t refuse! If you’re trying to get into yoga yourself, you can use this coupon to save on some yoga gear if you are on a budget!

Besides yoga, I’ve started to try and be healthier in two small ways.  One is to FINALLY, FOR REAL give up caffeine.  I know, I know, I said I was doing it last month, but it just never happened.  This week though we finally got decaf coffee for my beloved Keurig at work, and I’ve been making “half-caffs” in the morning.  The headaches so far have been minimal, so I’m hoping it’ll be only another week or so before they go away completely, and then I’ll switch to straight decaf.

The other recent change has been in my diet.  It might not be something major to other people, but it’s very significant to me.  I’ve stopped having an egg and cheese sandwich or bagel with cream cheese every weekday morning.  dun Dun DUNNN!!!  I know, right?  But seriously, I would have either one of those delicious, carby options every morning.  EVERY MORNING.  That’s BAD.  Especially since I’m at a job where I sit at my desk for basically 8 hours straight.  So, as this past Tuesday, I’ve stuck to fruit, yogurt or other healthy items for breakfast.   (Monday I had some wake up wraps from Dunkin’.  Not as bad as the full on sandwich, but definitely not healthy.)  So far, it’s pretty good!  I do miss the oozy, bright yellow cheese and creamy, rich cream cheese that came with my chewy bagels and buns, but I feel better not eating it.  I do need to go food shopping this weekend so I can stock up on the aforementioned healthy breakfast items, because buying them in the city is expensive as all hell.

I just feel great with all these changes and improvements for my body and my health.  Hopefully I’ll keep it up!!!

  1. You can do it, I know you can!!!

  2. I have fallen in love with yoga. For YEARS I have tried to make myself enjoy running, weight lifting, stair steppers etc but I feel with yoga I get a good workout and I feel calmer. Yay yoga!

  3. I got the Jillian Michaels YOGA DVD for Christmas and did it for the first time yesterday and I really like it. I like how it gets your heart rate up even though its yoga-based. It really focuses on thighs & glutes too- which is exactly what I need!

  4. I have been very interested in hot yoga, but…..
I hate heat. I would be in there, go to touch my toes and BOOM!
    Dead Rachel.

  5. I haven't tried hot yoga yet, but want to! I've been going to regular yoga on and off since last March, but need to get back into it! I just bought a groupon deal for a yoga studio here that has tons of different classes, so that is good!

Oh, and I just bought a Keurig for Steve for Christmas…uh oh!

  6. I think I'm going to try the half-caff thing soon too. I love my coffee but I don't want to depend on it to get me going in the morning. It would be nice to drink it to enjoy it, not to keep me from dying.

I have the Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown DVD and like it. Eventually I would love to do a yoga class but I want to get a little less spastic with it by practicing at home before I do it in public 🙂

  7. I'm officially giving up soda. I haven't had any since 12/26 and it feels great. I'm surprised that I've had no headaches to speak of… I feel better overall so far! Now if I could just kick the chocolate thing! =)

(And ironically I'm now craving an egg and cheese bagel…).

The number one thing (OK, maybe the number three thing) I'm looking forward to after getting this tiny human out of my uterus is getting back to Bikram ypga- nothing liek it, awesome natural high.

  9. I need to get back into yoga. I've been hitting the gym pretty hard, but I need to stretch myself out. I made a date this AM to go with a friend next week. Can't wait!

  10. way to be healthier lady, you can do it! also hot yoga sounds fascinating, although i can't stand saunas so i don't know that i'd be able to survive, haha.

  11. Good for you! All such great improvements — and I can say so because I've resolved to do much the same! …more yoga (I can't do hot yoga though. Am not a hot weather girl). …less coffee and more water (I'm limited to 2 cups/day – you're more brave than I am). …and stop the trips to Tim Horton's and Dunkin' Donuts on the way in to work. Even though it is SO DELICIOUS.

    In summation: go us.

Where did you go for yoga? I've wanted to try Brikam yoga for awhile but I'm not sure what studio I should go to in NYC.

  13. Jessica (Bayjb) says

I have not tried hot yoga yet and I'm not sure if I will. I really hate intense heats like that so I'm worried I may pass out. We'll discuss more 🙂

  14. You really kicked off the year ambitiously. Thanks for the inspiration!

  15. I love love love hot yoga too! Isn't it just the best feeling ever. I was seriously addicted there for a while – and I was getting so flexible! Unfortunately, it's so expensive to do here. Now you've made me really want to get back into it!
