Summer of Accomplishment Part Deux!! (NYC-to-See)

It’s that time once again. Last year Dave and I compiled a list of things that we wanted to do during the summer in NYC. We actually got a bunch of those things done, and as for walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, well you all know that occurred this past February when we got engaged. ๐Ÿ™‚ Regardless, that list was from 2008, and so we need one for 2009!

HOWEVER – I am now calling this list the “NYC-to-See” list, because it’s already July, and Dave and I are going to Costa Rica for 8 days, so I can’t see us having time to do everything by summer’s end. So, it’s a NYC bucket list, if you will. Even though I have no plans to leave the city anytime soon.

So here it is, and because I’m OCD, I categorized the list by borough. ๐Ÿ™‚

Manhattan

1. Guggenheim Museum – namely the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit. Closed – aka I’m a slacker and didn’t go in time.

2. Visit the new Water Taxi Beach at the South Street Seaport.

3. The High Line. This elevated abandoned train track was made into a park, and just opened about a month ago. It’s supposed to be really pretty and has art installations.Visited 7/12

4. Mani’s and Martinis at Beauty Bar. Mani’d and Martini’d up on 2/27

5. Eat at the following establishments: S’MAC, Shake Shack, Peanut Butter & Co., Serendipity. – Had “The Elvis” at PB& Co 8/10

6. Chelsea Brewing Company for some beers and views.Ate at 7/12

7. NYC Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side.

8. Bike ride on Govenor’s Island.

9. Rock climbing at Chelsea Piers.

10. Visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex. Dave got to take his classes, but I want to go!

11. Take the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. I’ve been to Ellis Island, but never the Statue of Liberty, and I think Dave did the opposite.

12. Experience the New York City Duck Tour!

13. Explore Chinatown. Maybe I’ll finally do the $1 Walking Tour from Time Out NY that was on my list last year.

14. Go to a Colbert Report or Daily Show taping. I will do this one day!

15. Get half-price tickets to a Broadway show at the TKTS booth.

16. See the limited engagement Titanic exhibition in Times Square. I am a slacker – AGAIN.

17. Get ice cream from the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, goodies from The Treats Truck, waffles from the Wafels & Dinges Truck, and cupcakes from the Cupcake Stop. (added 7/14)Visited the Treats Truck 8/12, Had Big Gay Ice Cream 8/14

18. Go boating in Central Park.

19. See the Tim Burton exhibit at the MoMA. (added 1/5) saw 1/9

Brooklyn

1. Coney Island. I’ve lived here my entire life and have not yet been to Coney Island. I hang my head in shame.went on 7/17

2. The Brooklyn Flea. And the Renegade Craft Fair.

3. Eat at Totonno’s, supposedly the best pizza in Brooklyn (don’t tell Grimaldi’s!).

4. Play games and booze up at Barcade.

5. Go to BAMcafรฉ Live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

6. Get cheesecake and an egg cream at Junior’s.

7. Hang out in Williamsburg. Now that my Chase has moved, I have no excuse to visit, but I love just walking around there.

8. Happy Hour at the Brooklyn Brewery.

9. Sell my used clothes at Beacon’s Closet. (This isn’t really an “NYC” thing to do, but I want to see if my clothes are hip enough to sell there. Haha!)

THE Bronx

1. Arthur Avenue. Home to the best Italian food and desserts and I haven’t eaten there yet.

2. Bronx Zoo! Enough said.

3. Hang out and take pictures at Wave Hill.

4. Go to a Yankees game at the new stadium.

5. Visit the Van Cortlandt House – an old wheat plantation and now gorgeous park.

6. Tour the Edgar Allen Poe cottage. Where he wrote Annabell Lee!

7. Ride the Bronx Trolley. Yes we have a trolley. We’re that awesome of a borough.

Queens

1. Lemon Ice King of Corona. I used to go ALL THE TIME when I lived at home, now, I think I went once last summer. I need me some peanut butter ices. (Trust me, they are amazing!)had ices 7/3

2. Boating at Flushing Meadows Park. I’ve driven past it so many times, but have never gone!

3. Go to a Mets game at the new Citi Field.

4. Get ice cream at Eddie’s Sweet Shop. This place is amazing, and they make their own whipped cream! Drool.

5. Hang out at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. I love this place. Amazingly large glasses of beer and the best kielbasa you’ve ever had.

6. Tour the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City.

7. Have some beers at the new beer garden in L.I.C, Studio Square. They also have sushi!

Miscellaneous items include:

1. Trying to use as many Diner’s Deck cards as we can before December 31, 2009. (6/52) FAIL.

2. Use and keep accumulating awesome Groupons. So far I have a bunch for a tapas place, a cheese and wine bar, wine classes, etc. I’m kind of over Groupons. I bought a bunch, and have let 2 expire, and more will prob go to waste.

If you noticed that Staten Island isn’t listed on here, that’s because in my opinion there’s nothing to do there. Sorry, Staten Island people. Your little strip of land does not impress me. (Let the hating comments come out now!)

And if there’s anything you think I missed that I need to do, please throw it my way! I’m going to keep adding to this list if I find more things I need to see/do. And I’ll keep ya’ll updated as I bang out each one. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love the list, we did something similar to that last fall however it's taken a backseat since our lives have been so consumed lately with my moving in and wedding planning.

As for your list, I'm putting some of your stuff on mine. I've done a few on your list:
Shake Shack is definitely worth it! (serendipity, not so much).
I really enjoyed the Queens Beer Garden – the food is pretty good too.

  7. and I forgot to add:
I liked Coney Island too. The hotdogs are worth every cent! ๐Ÿ™‚

This list looks like a lot of fun. Good Luck! Its funny how you never seem to do all the tourist-y things when you actually live somewhere

  13. Allison Blass says

This is a great list! I think I might make my own and borrow some of these to do with my boyfriend. Looking forward to reading your experiences and seeing what you liked/didn't like.

  14. Non Sequitur Chica says

I totally want to see a Daily Show or Colbert Report taping too! I have to wait until after the honeymoon so that I can save up some vacation time to head down to NYC!

  15. I would love to see the FLW exhibit. I love him.

    And S'Mac is AMAZING.

  16. Awesome list. Isn't it funny how we can live so long in a certain city yet we haven't really visited some places that people talk about the most? Now I feel like making a bucket list.

  17. Thank you woman for this lovely list.

im headed back to NYC in a month and totally need to start my list of what im doing on this trip. I used to spend so much time wandering that damn city, i havent been back in two years and i am going to have a FULL agenda!

dont mind if i borrow this, k?

  18. Great list… I am actually going to The Water Taxi Beach this weekend. While looking at this, I wanted to do some of it so I will. Since I dont want to waste my summer. Ooh and may I add one thing to your list. Staten Island has one great thing, that I want to do and you may find interesting. Skydiving! Im not from there nor have I ever been there but this does seem cool.

  19. that is quite a list! I *think* I have convinced my husband to take me to NYC for my 30th bday in October…perhaps I will use your list as a guide for our trip ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. The Brooklyn Boy says

Went to S'MAC last night, actually. It was delicious.

And as a Brooklynite, I'm demanding that Coney Island and Junior's actually happen. I'll even organize that plan for you. Sheeeit.

Also, thanks for the BAM plug. You should def check out the BAMcafe because a) the music is awesome and b) you'd be helping to contribute to my mother's paycheck, and my family would be much obliged. ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. OK, so you need a Long Island list, and it should include Coming to visit me and seeing our new house, and rubbing my baby bump! ๐Ÿ™‚ love you and miss you tons!!!!
